You didn't mention if you had dual alternators/generators so this is for the single. I believe the tensioner just needs either a 1/2 drive or 3/8 drive ratchet to turn it. There is a square hole designed for it. Below are some pictures and instructions. Hope this is what you were looking for and hope you do have the single generator. I have the dual and is you need it you can reply here or feel free to email me at and I will email you that. No there will be no charge if you need it. Don't mind helping and hope this helps....

Ok, Alternators are a breeze on these things. There are two bolts that hold it on, and 2 sets of wires. If you haven't taken anything apart yet, and the belt is still on it, here's what to do. You will want one of those rubber or elastic bungee cords, about 2 and a half feet long(this makes it easy). Hook that bungee cord to your hood somewhere, so that it hangs down. Hook the other end on the serpentine belt right next to the alternator pulley. If you need to prop the hood up with a stick or something to keep it up, do so. Pull up on the belt, and watch the pulleys. The one that probably has a plastic pulley on it that moves up and down(this is the tensioner) is the one that you'll put a deep well socket in the middle of with a ratchet, and turn counterclockwise. This will make the belt go loose. Now you can work the belt off the alternator pulley, and once you get it off, the bungee cord will keep it in place, so you don't have to look at the diagram. Otherwise, if it comes off, there is a sticker just under the hood either on the fan shroud or the radiator support that has the belt diagram. Now, you can disconnect the battery, pull the rubber boot down off the nut and post on the back of the alternator, remove the nut and wire, and then unhook the wire from the side of the alternator. Now, you can remove the two bolts that hold the alternator on. You Will need to pry the alternator off at this point, as it fits really tightly in place. A socket extension or a large flat screwdriver works really well for this. Once you get it off, put the new one on exactly as you took the old one off. Note, you will have to release your tension on the tensioner at some point; i just ease it down, or if I can pull it off, wedge it somewhere where it won't loosen very far. Remember, on the tensioner, you're not trying to take the nut off. All you're doing is using it to move the tensioner arm. That's all there is to this job. Sometimes it can be stubborn with the prying part, especially getting it into place. Hope this is what you're after, and if you need more info, leave a comment for me.

SOURCE: serpentine belt diagram

The serpentine belt routing should be labeled on your radiator shroud. Look around the engine compartment like the hood or radiator fram suport and there should be a label with the the belt routing.
Good luck and hope this helps

SOURCE: How to loosen alternator tension on a 2003 Lancer

I have not seen this vehicle but, the center bolt or nut that holds the tensioner to the block is backed off two turns first.
Then the adustment bolt (most are accesed from under the vehicle) can be adjusted to give enough slack to install the new belt.
If this is still too tight, remove one of the two or two of the three bolts that mount the Alternator to allow for another 1/8" and install the belt.
Then remount the Alternator.
Then readjust the tension bolt.
Finish with the bolt or nut that mounts the tensionor to the block.
good luck.

A diagram for a 1999 Mercury Tracer serpentine belt to replace it

A person doesn't need a diagram to replace a serpentine belt.

Simply thread the belt around the pulleys alternating between smooth pulley to back of the belt, and the grooved pulleys to the inside of the belt, until the last pulley is the tensioner pulley, which is loosened using a breaker bar.

It really is that simple.

I need to know how to replace my serpentine belt

Hello. Begin by making a diagram of exactly how the belt makes it's way around the components, unless you have a diagram. Often there is a diagram on a sticker under the hood and one in the owner manual.

Then begin by loosening up the tension. The tensioner is built onto either the alternator itself or the power steering pump. There should be one or more bolts that need to be loosened and then you will have a bolt that loosens the tensioner bolt attached to either the alternator or power steering pump. Hope this helps

How do you change the serpentine belt

Ignore the first post then, i just saw this one afterwards which you clarified it being the serpentine belt. In which case, you need to find the alternator. Found it? good! now check the bracket holding the alternator in place, there should be a bolt on there that holds it tightly to some sort of track allowing you to change the angle the alternator is sitting at. That one is the adjustment bolt that allows you to tighten or loosen the serpentine belt. On those years, GM used the alternator to bind the belt to save money on design. So just loosen the bolts on the alternator, bring it up to loosen the belt (you might need a prybar to help you move it), BUT BEFORE YOU TAKE THE BELT OFF, make a diagram of the belt routing, cause once its off if you don't have oneon hand, putting a new belt back in can be pretty tricky since there are many curves it needs to take and can seem to be in the right place on either side of the pulleys, but it will end up being too tight of too loose.
