2004 Saturn Ion - Power Steering Problem

The power steering indicator came on and the power steering was out. What could cause this problem? I can't even find where the power steering fluid goes and the owner's manual is no help at all. Mine is a 2006 Saturn ION. Mine has been going out repeatedly while I am driving. I had the fuse checked (and I looked too). The fuse was fine.

I had another electrical problem before this with the emissions system. It seemed to resolve itself.

I have also had a problem with the passlock system in cold weather.

It seems that the ION (at least this model) has several issues with respect to electrical/sensor systems.

Anyone know what the problem is with the power steering for certain? I dread taking the car in for someone to look at because I can afford to have someone charge me to look at it and fix things that don't need to be fixed trying to figure it out. I MIGHT be able to afford the repair to the actual problem depending on what it really is.

Any good/reliable info is appreciated.

I have same problem. It just started and of course the warranty just expired 1,000 miles ago. Car only has 37,000 miles on it. It's a 2006 Saturn Ion. Rick

I have the same exact problem with my 2006 Saturn Ion with 60,00 miles on it. The reason you cannot find the fluid cap is because there is no fluid, it is eletrical power steering.

If I turn the car off and then back on it'll go away. Sometimes all day & sometimes it will come right back. This morning I had to restart the car about 5 times.

I went to the saturn dealership to ask them to check it out and they said 54 bucks just to diagnose no work done. Your poopy car and you want ME to pay 54 bucks. Pisses me off.

This just happened to my '06 Saturn Ion last night for the first time. Warranty was up a few months ago. 42,000 miles. This is dangerous and needs to be recalled!

I also have a Saturn ION and the powwer steering light went on as the power steering stopped working. What should I do?

  • SaturnDriver Apr 20, 2009

Call 1-800-553-6000. File an official complaint (will need your VIN). This is worthy of recall in my opinion -- hundreds others seem to have posted with similar complaint. If they recall, you'll be reimbursed for cost of repair (I'm not so lucky to still be in my warranty period).

It is very likely that either the electric motor is out or one of the sensors that send info to the control module is out, or the control module, most likely it will be the motor. I have read many post about this electric steering, I would contact Saturn and ask if there are any recalls on it.

Mine is in the shop right now for the same problem. There is some sort of computer in the steering column that goes bad and they can not just replace the piece, they have to replace a good portion of the column its self. Luckilly ours went out with 2500 miles left on the warentee so it's covered. I have no clue what the part is called, the chick at the service dept keeps calling it the rack and i keep explaining the rack is not in the steering column. I work in the auto parts biz and i may be a blonde chick but i know cars. And this 'aint the rack.

Power steering problem is hard and dont find the power steering pomp

These vehicles have electric power steering. There is an electric motor under the steering column that provides the power steering assist. GM also had a special policy coverage on this motor as it has been notorious for causing the problems you are describing. Read on:

Some customers of 2004-2007 model year Saturn ION vehicles, equipped with electric power steering, may experience a sudden loss of power steering assist, which could occur at any time while driving the vehicle. If the power steering assist is lost, a chime will be heard and the Message Center will display a "PWR STR" warning message. The vehicle can still be steered in a safe manner but will require greater driver effort at low vehicle speeds or when stopped. Typically, the next time the vehicle is started, the power steering assist will return and the "PWR STR" message would no longer be displayed..................
This special coverage covers the condition described above for a period of 10 years or 100,000 miles (160,000 km), whichever occurs first, from the date the vehicle was originally placed in service, regardless of ownership.
Retailers are to replace the power steering motor. The repairs will be made at no charge to the customer.

Steering

It is an electric assist steering. On very heavy use the motor can become overheated and goes into "safe mode" only partial assist until it cools down. Repeated attempts at parrallel parking have been know to cause this.

2004 Saturn Ion - Power Steering Problem

The motor on the power steering is overheating which causes the thermal overloads to trip.

go tho the junk yard and buy a motor for a 2004 thru 206 ion or a 2004 thru 2008 chevy colbalt.

they are all the same. You may have to buy the wholle steering colum but you can remove the motor with 2 - 12mm bolts and a quick dissconnect pulg. Replace just the motor as the whole steering colum is a bit more complicated. the dealerships want you to replace the whoe steering colum, in fact that is the only way they sell the parts. It is a scam. Just the motor needs to be replaced.
I have done it on 4 different ions. try to get a motor with few as possible miles and as new as possible. I have paid between $50 and $125 for these. The dealer wants $900 fnad about $500 to install. It is very simple to do. Only 2 bolts.
