I have a 96 chevy 1500, 305 fan clutch seems to b ingauged Is the fan clutch when cold free spin.

The fan clutch should only be engaged on the hotter days of the year or under heavy sustained loads, if that is not the case the fan clutch may be defective

Your A/C system may be running low on R134a.
To diagnose problems, an A/C manifold gauge set is needed to read high and low side pressure readings. Avoid adding refrigerant with a simple charging kit like the ones sold at parts stores. Don’t add any stop leak, this can cause problems in the compressor, expansion valve or condenser.
First, on a 134A system the high and low side service ports are different sizes. AC gauge sets have color coded hoses, the blue color coded hose has a connection that fits on the low side service port and the red hose has a connection that will only fit onto the high side. The yellow hose won’t hook up to anything if just checking the readings; it can be used to connect to a vacuum pump or attached to a refrigerant can or tank.
Normal readings on high and low side with AC OFF (static pressure) – Depends on outside temperature, but normally is between 80-105 PSI
Normal low side reading with AC on high speed and MAX & engine at 800-1000 RPM’s – Ranges from 25-35 PSI – Note that on many Chrysler products a normal reading on the low side may be 15-25 PSI
Normal high side reading ranges from 200-350 PSI
Don’t assume that if adding little Freon is good that adding a lot is better! Overcharging just a little can decrease the performance of the system and possibly damage the compressor.
With the AC on the coldest setting, use a thermometer in a middle vent. Normal vent temperature readings will vary depending on the (ambient) outside temp. The vent temperature should range from around 42-55 degrees in my experience. If normal gauge readings are obtained and the vent air is cold – STOP don’t overcharge the system. The only proper way to remove refrigerant is with a AC recovery machine so if this is being done at home I can’t emphasize enough not to over charge the system. And actually the best way to insure the proper charge is in a system, is to use an AC machine to recover the freon and then evacuate and recharge the system with the correct amount. Most cars have the specified amount on a decal under the hood.
Both low and high side readings are lower than normal, this indicates a cars AC system is low on refrigerant and is under-charged.
If both low and high side readings are too high, this indicates an overcharged system – too much refrigerant. This also can indicate that the condenser fan is not working, is too slow or the car is overheating and heat is transferring from the radiator to the condenser.
When the low side goes so low that it’s reading shows it is in a vacuum, the most likely cause is a bad expansion valve or blocked orifice tube. Another possibility is a restricted condenser. Blocked condensers are not as common as they used to be but if a compressor fails and comes apart inside the remnants can end up in the condenser causing it to restrict the flow of refrigerant.
When the compressor clutch is definitely engaged and the low side is high and the high side is low, the most likely cause is that the compressor is failing – it is not pumping sufficiently. Rarely an AC clutch could be slipping but usually this will be accompanied with a squeal or chirp. Also be sure not to overlook the obvious, like a loose belt
Note: The line going from the compressor to the condenser is the discharge line – it is normal for it to be very hot to the touch. The other line going from the drier or accumulator to the compressor is normally colder. The liquid line can be hot up to the point an orifice tube is in place. Just remember that LOW Pressure = COLD and HIGH Pressure = HOT.
If you do want to recharge the system your self, make sure you do not over charge and use the thermometer at the vent and when it's cold enough, turn off the valve from the recharge line and disconnect from the low pressure service port. Good luck

How do I check to see if my fan clutch is good or bad


Start the engine and run it till is warmed completely. Shut the engine off and see if the fan spins freely by hand. It should be stiff when engine is warm. Really free is bad when warm. Only spins free when cold so engine will warm up without the fan stiff.

if you have electric fans, make sure they are working and that there is sufficient coolant in the overflow tank and radiator. If you have a manual fan clutch, try spinning the fan with the engine off, It spins freely or goes around more than once with just a quick push, your fan clutch is bad and needs to be replaced. and it is a fan clutch...not a clutch fan...as people sometimes call it.

I would check the clutch fan or (radiator fan), try this when the truck is cold the fan should spin free and when it is warm the fan should stiffen up. the fan should spin slower when cold and faster when warm.

I have a 2002 chevy s-10 4 cyl. 2.2 liter its not starting it overheated while i was driving the ratiator is bad i tested the sparkplugs for commpression it was good why wont it start


when engine over heating to keep from doing engine damage determine how long you drive vechicle if you stopped in time.replace thermostat, radiator pressure cap and replace radiator if it has holes in it and leaking replace top and bottom radiator hoses.check your engine oil on oil dip stick if dip stick look like milk shake you could blowed head gasket if you did drive too long when truck over heated.check your radiator cooling clutch fan should when engine cold turn clutch fan by hand should drag when engine get hotter then clutch fan should be more harder to turn by hand.if clutch fan feel loose and spin easily free wheel clutch fan need replacing it will cause engine to overheat.

I don't understand what you mean about the engine gaining RPM. Does it run alright, and just overheat with a/c on? If so, I would suspect your fan clutch. Hope this helps, TJ

The first thing to check is the fan, this fan has a clutch bolted to it, when the motor gets hot it locks the fan and this make it spin faster when its cold it doesnt spin as fast and this sounds lock its locked all the time, with the engine cold spin the fan it should spin a lttle freely if its tight then replace the fan clutch, to do this you will remove the fan and then unbolt the clutch from the fan and replace it, here a picture to help you understand, good luck and i hope this is helpful.johnjohn2_7.jpgjohnjohn2_8.jpg

Cooling Fan Spinning Fast On A Cold Start


most fans are clutch fans and they work or are engaged by temp.most all will spin under really cold conditions.this is normal.but to be sure, with the motor off and key in your pocket grab the fan and see if it wiggles or has any slop. if not alls good

Auxiliary fan


I think there are two fan switches on the 99 but I don't recall for sure. At some point during the B5 chassis run (96-01) they went from two two-wire switches to a single integrated switch. It's possible that you have the two switch design and only changed one of them. Also, your fan clutch could be shot. If you spin the fan, it should spin one revolution or less and then stop. If it spins freely the clutch is shot and needs replacement.

A/C compressor clutch


First thing to ask your self is, When you ingauge the clutch does cold air come out the vents? If so Charge is likely sufficent, If air is cool but not cold likely charge is low & is the cause of compresser not kickin on the clutch. place a proper charge in the system but make sure you know how much to add in, what type of refridgerant it takes ( 134-a ), (R-12). Besure that you use no sealers & that no sealers or Propane was used potentel system damage & injury or Death could result as improper proceeding at this point.
If you do have cold air check the lowside pressure switch function. You do this by first locating the switch disconecting the pigtail & useing a proper jumper wire across the 2 pigtail (female) ends of the harness connector not the switch its self.
If compresser clutch ingauges & Cold air blows from the vents replace low side pressure switch if this does not work grab your wallet,the yellow pages & the phone. I strongly recommend takeing your vehical to a qualified repair facility or Tech.
