I think what you have is just a failed fuel injection fuel pump, the pump is located inside the fuel tank and the fuel tank must be removed to access and replace the pump assembly.

SOURCE: 1990 Pontiac Lemans choke plate location

I'm venturing to guess that a 1990 lemans is fuel injected. then you wouldn't have a choke plate. I would start by checking the iginition system first, plugs, wires, cap, rotor, and if all that looks good then look at the fuel system.

76?? it's on the passenger side,mid-way up the block. It's mechanical & use grease to hold the fuel pump rod in place when installing. Now you posted in the 1990,if it's that then it's in the gas tank & it electric.

The fuel pump is in the fuel tank.Sit in the car.....turn on the ignition switch to run.....listen very closely to the rear of the car...or have someone kneel down by the back wheel.....you should hear a "prime cycle"......the pump running for 2 or 3 seconds if the key was off for 15 seconds before trying this.If you hear silence you most likely need a fuel pump. Before pulling the tank down....check for power on the gray wire at the fuel tank connector just ahead of the rear axle under the car.Check for power with a test light that will last for 2 to 3 seconds as you turn on the key to run.Power means you really most likely need a pump.No power means you may need a fuse or a fuel pump relay.

These cars where prone to problems in the stock antitheft system. This causes injector shutdown. Might be something to look into. Here's a link on that. http://vatspasslockpasskeysecurityhelp.yolasite.com/

We have spark and she tries to start even makes a slight backfire sometimes but just won't start. Any suggestions? She's a Lemans ....1990 I think

Sure its not a he cause a he they dont work and they break down so much?Sounds like low fuel pressure, fuel pump doesnt make pressure it supplies volume pressure is in the line, that why pressure regulator need to be check always, to make sure, but regulator hardly fail, when a fuel pressure is at a requied pressure the injector atomizes the spray pattern and thus combustion happens, without the proper presure you can be sure of a no start, you have spark and not enough pressure you can probable hit the bottom of the tank and get a temporary start but if any it wont be a long one

The regulator may have locked up preventing anything to pass. It could also be a clogged filter. Those are two of the biggest reasons why fuel wont get to the injectors.

take some WD40 and spray into the intake, if it acts likes it wants to start then it is the fuel system. Take the line off before the filter see if it pumping gas, if not then it is the fuel pump, then after the filter and see if it pumping gas, then at the engine. Now if it does not act like it wants to start it is the ignition system. Good Luck Tim

Several possibilities: fuel filter may be plugged, fuel pump may be going bad and under-pumping. Ignition system may have a problem, or charging system may not be putting out enough voltage to power the ignition system (but usually accompanied by no start /low battery condition) If dash warning light comes on when this happens, have a code check done (most large parts houses do this free) Also have charging system tested. From what you said though I'm leaning towards the filter or pump as the cause of your problem.
