SOURCE: slow to go in reverse,

Check the transmission fluid level. If this is ok, then the fluid and filter will probably need to be changed. DO NOT use the transmission flush at a quick lube. They do not change the filter. A transmission also has a pump to circulate the fluid that can go bad, but I think a transmission fluid and filter change will solve your problem.

Will not shift in my 2000 chevy lumina

a jeep lumina?
wrong forum but that is ok, seems to be common here.
what wont shift.
A/T or M/T auto or stick? tranny????
what does will not , mean?
I cant move the shift lever
i cant shift, to 2nd
IT (autobox ) will not shift ever, or slips or flares. or?
if its and A/T autotranny, tell me what it does right and wrong
here is an example.
i start engine.
i shift to drive car dont move, in any gear
i see RPM race high with right foot over 3000 RPM.
tranny failure. (slips)
or RPM stays near 1500, and engine sounds loaded,
and i find the parking brake stuck on, or the brakes are full of ice
and stuck fast.

Transmission automatic

is the OD lamp acting up> is the CEL lamp on, driving???????????

old car, most 96 have long since , given up the ghost.

stops in 1st gear?

some times. (common) the oil (ATF) gets hot (normal) and when hot

it is more thin, and when more thin, finds leaks inside better.

what can happen is pump pressure is marginal and hot fails.

and pressure inside drops and transmission fails to shift.

did you run the scanner to see if THE A/T has thrown DTC codes?

why not get the A/.T a full service, most are never done.

and will be full of junk inside due to zero service. (this full flush is good on cars every 50k, but if ignored for 300k , the flush makes it worse)

but do pull the codes first.

the FSM covers that.

It has full on car testing , read that too.

Does the A/T fail (hot) and stick in1st gear

(the stall test in the FSM pass?>)?

the stall test, is with all brakes hard set.

and you do a hot engine/trans , WOT, for 5 seconds max. (RTM)

RTM means read the manual, its documented 100% this.

WOT is wide open throttle (short time)

then you look at RPM (engine)

and see how high it goes, if too low, the engine is weak

if too high the transmission is slipping and will now burn up if driven

do not ignore slipping or doom happens faster.

the next test is the on car,. tranny test ports for pump pressure.

that too, is in the FSM for first checks)

The A/T is complex. read the book, or get help

Black smoke in the exhaust and in high rpm white on passat 1.9tdi

this case , you have to check turbo charger , when high RPM white smoke means lubricate oil goes to engine so give white smoke . on low rpm trubo close coming black smoke means no enough air gose to engine so this need to replace turbo . some type of turbo can be clean the wase gate ( which open with diafam beside turbo) make sure it's moving when accilerate. check vacum is ok . then clean wase gate > only some type have wings inside )if no replace turbo

I Have a turbo 350 transmisson when you put it into gear it wont move until you git the rpm's up to about 3500.

Since I don't know your vehicles history this may be a bit more complicated than it needs to be. If you bought it like that, and the shift points are very solid with no slipping, then it is likely that you have a race type converter with a high stall speed in there.
If shifting and going into gear were normal before this happened, first make sure the fluid is full and the filter is not obstructed. If everything there is good then chances are the converter, pump, or both, are failing and the unit needs to be rebuilt. (with converter replacement) Slipping or flaring on shifts may also be a symptom, but you did not mention that.

Automatic transmission

Transmission will never hold the engine back if it is going through the gears properly. If it gets into high gear, eventually the engine will reach "redline" if you stay into it long enough. ("redline" for any engine is the point at which it cannot run any faster without harming itself.) DO NOT confuse that with proper shift points which should happen just before you reach max torque which happens way before you reach "redline" at which point you are way past the torque peak of the engine, and making no usable torque or horsepower. An example of this is a race engine with a max rpm limit of 10,000rpm.("redline") Depending upon the torque curve (determined by compression, stroke and type of cam grind) you would likely be shifting gears at about 7500 to 8500RPM not at 10,000.
Therefore, your shift points are like climbing a ladder. you get just so high and though there are more steps, you will fall off if you go there. Each time you shift, you are putting the rpms back into the usable power band, till you reach the next step, then start over again. If your trans shifts early the engine will lug and labor. shifting too late and it will quickly reach "redline" and self destruct or go "flat". In a conversion, you need to make sure that the electronics that control shift points are working within the usable torque range.
OR install a manual valve body and shifter and control it like a stick shift car, using your brain as the computer and a tach to tell you where you are.

Engine gets to a high RPM before it shifts

check all vacuum starting at the pump on these mpodels and see if you are getting around 29" of vacuum. if you are not this is your issue. it sounds like it is doing it mechanically and not assisted. this is a very good way to destroy your transmission. it is very possible that you have a leak somewhere else in the system causing a vacuum leak. i am guessing all your door locks do not work.email me at iambanshee74@yahoo.com
