More often than not this is caused by a large vacuum leak on the engine, the surge up and down is the computer trying to slow the idle. Use a bottle of propane gas and a torch adapter with a rubber hose on it, spray the gas around the top of the top of the engine and alos around any vacuum hoses from the engine, if you hit a vacuum leak the engine will sound much different, repair as needed.

slide the lower part of shifter handle down and you will find two screws, but there is 2 wires coming in from center console for overdrive button.you have to remove the center console cover and remove the 2 wires from connector and then pull up threw handle.when you go back together you will have to guide them back threw the handle.

Not too bad. Not much room, just enough to drop the starter. It is probably easier to go up through exhaust if you can get your exhaust shield off the manifold .

Why does my 96 lexus ls400 idle high when i start it up all the time would that have anything to do with a belt or hose

I doubt it.
Probably a vac leak or problem with the throttle body.
The engine computer controls idle speed.

Wiper switch replacement on 1996 lexus ls400

According to the THIRD wiring diagram on the
BBB INDUSTRIES FREE circuit drawings and
TECHNICAL SERVICE BULLETINS...

(registration required (these are real documents))...

You can disable the "airbag squibs" by pulling
SPECIFIC fuses out of the AIRBAG SENSOR ASSEMBLY...

I will not quote the FUSES... because TOYOTA is
quite famous for playing their TECHNICAL DATA
close to their vests... (my opinion).

However you will be happy to know the WIPER SWITCH
shows as AVAILABLE 20 years later (obviously popular)
((even on AMAZON))...

Hope this helps!!

My lexus ls400 1996 shakes violently when i shift from parking position to drive position. Also the idle is very high over 2000. It takes 10 to 15 min to get under 2000. anyone has answer

the high idle is likely the problem. you will probably have to take your car in and have it checked. probably a vaccum or sensor not working right.

What would be wrong if my 96 ls400 lexus is idling high consistantly

most likely the iac is all gummed up and stuck open. its your idle air control its located on your intake by your throutle body. you can remove it and clean it with some carburator cleaner and spray some up in the intake. or its a vacum leak hope this helps.
