SOURCE: shifting gears

the speed sensor is for Overdrive only, it does not shift the gears it sends the signal to the transmission control module that in turn signals the overdrive shift solenoid to engage/shift into OD.

SOURCE: My 1999 Dodge Caravan will not shift out of 1st. gear.

YES the speed sensor is first to check, but dont just go buy one and put it in. does the odometer work? if so, its getting a signal. The insrument clusters are common to fail, ususally a cracked solder joint in the circuit board. it will need to be removed and resoldered. if the odometer does not work, then check and verify that the spped sensor is indeed not putting any signal to the dash.

'99 dodge grand caravan it won't shift above first gear, the speedometer won't work, also dies when put in netural while driving???

Replace the out put speed sensor. The reason it is in 2nd gear.(limp mode) Looking down at the front of the transmission, it is the sensor on the right. The dieing could be a dirty air filter, throttle body and IAC motor.

My 1999 grand caravan wont shift out of first gear

Check to see if the shift cable is working properly.Might be broke? Or if it'sok then the van could be in what is called the "limp home mode" which means that the computer has sensed a problem and has switched to a safe mode which keeps the van going just enough to get you off the freeway or home where you can safely determine the problem. Also check that the transmission fluid is where it should be on the dipstick.

I have a 1996 dodge caravan 2.4 litre w/automatic transmission. Sometimes the transmission shifts fine and other times it won't shift at all. If it won't shift I pull over cut the van off and restart it...

This is called limp mode(2nd gear). This means the onboard diagnostics have detected a problem. This could be as simple as a bad speed sensor or could mean a bad transmission. If you have all the gears sometimes most likely there is a bad sensor or solenoid. You will need to have codes pulled and ask the shop to tell you the CVI values. If you get back to me with this information I can tell you what is wrong.

How do i get my 2000 dogde carvan out of low gear

I'm guessing that the problem you have is the van only has 2nd gear. This is limp mode. You need to have the Transmission control module scanned for codes. You likely have a bad speed sensor. Does the speedometer work?

All lights in gear lights light up, speedometer won't work and will only work in low gear

The main problem - stuck in low gear indicates that the shift solenoid may have gone out. In that case it must be replaced. This happens to all these vans eventually. BUT, you might try checking the transmission fluid level just to make sure it is not too low.

I have a 1991 Dode Caravan. It won't shift out of first gear, it's an automatic. Is the a cable from the throtle to the trans tat controls shifting? what could be the problem

it sounds like it is limp mode,
if the computer see a problem in the transmission it will keep it in first gear so you can limp to a shop for repairs.
check to see if your speedometer is working if not the problem is the output sensor

2003 Caravan transmission issue

Sounds like your trans is stuck in limp in mode. Could be something simple as a sensor, or something major as the trans or the computer. Will need to be computer diagnosed.
