Re: Gear Stuck in Parking
Linkage jamed up / obstructed ? Try blocking the wheels and having someone IN THE CAR with their foot on the brake , and climb under the hood and disconect the shift linkage. Try moving it by hand. If this works , then the linkage should be looked at , it is probably a cable linkage and can be replaced with a salvage yards for cheap enough.

The stuck in park is easy disconnect the linkage at the transmission and move the selector red by two notches (by hand) this will place the transmission in neutral if there is resistance chock the wheels release the handbrake and rock the car ( back and forward to take load off the parking parking pawl which is stuck) no electrics is because of the ignition position remove the ignition switch from the column this isolates from the ignition lock and manually move the slide until the engine starts (make sure the hoot & hand brake are applied in case you ******* up the selector job and left it in gear. once the engine starts reconnect the transmission linkage. restart the engine and run the selector through the gears if all is OK.either cut the old ignition lock off the steering column and replace or get a locksmith to remove the key and then re-cut a new key from the spare or from the manufacturers code. all done
With that model of Plymouth it is likely auto transmission needs a service. I am assuming you have auto transmission. Need to press the brake pedal before you can shift to D. But if the lever is not moving at all then solenoids could have gone. Go to a transmission specialist for Plymouth voyager.
Try pushing it down with your foot again & pulling up on the release at the same time. This should release it. Also try backing up while you pull the release. Sometimes this will jar the cable to release. THe cable may need to be replaced. Good luck!
do the brake lights work? the system has a lock out that keeps you from moving out of park unless the brake circuit is activated, hence no brake lights no park lock out release, if the brk lights do work u most have a stuck or defective park lock out solenoid.
ALWAYS engage the Parking Brake BEFORE putting car into "Park". When you want to get out of "Park", put your foot on the brake pedal, move gear shifter into desired gear, THEN take down Parking Brake. If you get stuck (gear shifter doesn't move), then try the "rocking" method (recruit 1 or 2 folks to push your car from behind while you try to move gear shifter into desired gear). Good luck!
