98 Chrysler Sebring where is the neutral safety switch located

Honestly I work on so many different vehicles and dont know specific location. It is only one of 3 locations. I assume the transmission is automatic so that rules out the nuetral safety switch on the pedal assembly. So that leaves automatic, which can be located on the parking pawl portion of the transmission. It is built into the selector switch that tells you what gear you are in. Or the nuetral start safety switch can be located on the shifter inside the car. Hope this helps.

What is a neutral safety switch?

The Neutral Safety switch monitors the position of your gear selector lever and either interrupts or allows the starting circuit in your car or truck to do its job. On newer vehicles it may also monitor the position of the brake pedal to make sure that the vehicle is in park or neutral AND that your foot is on the brake.

If your vehicle is equipped with a neutral safety switch, it should NOT start UNLESS the transmission is in Neutral or Park. On the other hand your vehicle SHOULD start when it is in Neutral or Park. If your car will start in Neutral but not in Park, you have a bad switch. Also, if your car or truck will only start by turning the key to the start position and wiggling the gear selector lever, your neutral safty switch is in need of replacement.

The nuetral safety switch is usually found near the gear shifter. If your car has the gear shift on the column, then the neutral safety switch is usully mounted on the steering column near the brake pedal. On floor mount or console mount vehicles you will find the nuetral safety switch mounted near or on the shifter mechanism.

Neutral safety switch

1996-98 Cirrus, Stratus, Sebring Convertible and Breeze; 1997-98 Sebring Coupe and Avenger

These vehicles are not equipped with a conventional neutral safety switch or back-up light switch. Instead, the automatic transaxle is equipped with a Transaxle Range Sensor (TRS), which is located on top of the valve body. This sensor performs the functions of the neutral safety and back-up light switches.

The TRS, if defective, must be removed with the transaxle's valve body as an assembly. The TRS is mounted on the top side of the valve body.

Hope ths helps (remember to rate and comment this).

I have a 1998 chevy cavalier automatic, it would'nt start this morning in park and went out later and tried it in neutral and it started right up. has never did that before, what may have caused that?

If it will crank and start when in nuetral but won't crank over at all when in park then you may have a failing Park/Nuetral safety switch. This switch goes by a variety of names such as transmission range switch, PRNDL switch, etc., and when they begin to fail they can produce the symptoms you are having. There also could be a transmission shift linkage problem that is preventing the switch from fully reaching the "park" position but that is quite rare.

Trying to locate the nuetral safety switch in 1990 GMC 1/2 ton

The back-up light switch is incorporated into the neutral/park safety switch. The neutral safety switch on 1988-94 models is mounted in the steering column.

Neutral Start/Back-Up Switch
The procedure is for switches that are mounted on the transmission only.
This adjustment is performed with the switch removed from the vehicle. Neutral position tool J 41364-A or its equivalent is required for this procedure.
  1. Position tool J 41364-A or its equivalent onto the park/neutral switch. make sure that the slots on the switch are lined up with the lower tabs on the tool.
  2. Rotate the tool until the upper locator pin on the tool is lined with the slot on the top of the switch.
Do not remove the tool from the switch.
  1. Install the switch and remove the tool.

Hope this helped (remember rated this post).

How to replace nuetral safety switch

Automatic Transmission The back-up light switch on 1995-98 models is incorporated into the neutral/park safety switch. The back-up light switch on 1988-94 models is mounted in the steering column and is covered in Section 8 of this manual. This procedure applies to 1995-98 models only.
  1. Place the transmission in park and disconnect the negative battery cable.
  2. Raise the vehicle and support it with jack stands.
  3. Disconnect the shift cable end from the shift control lever and remove the nut securing the shift control lever to the manual shaft.
  4. Unplug the electrical connector from the switch and remove the switch retainers.
  5. Remove the switch from the transmission.
To install:
This adjustment is performed with the switch removed from the vehicle. Neutral position tool J 41364-A or its equivalent is required for this procedure.
  1. Position tool J 41364-A or its equivalent onto the park/neutral switch. make sure that the slots on the switch are lined up with the lower tabs on the tool.
  2. Rotate the tool until the upper locator pin on the tool is lined with the slot on the top of the switch. Do not remove the tool from the switch
Before sliding the switch onto the shaft, it may be necessary to lightly file the outer edge of the shafts to remove any burrs.
  1. Align the switch hub flats with the manual shaft flats, then slide the switch onto the shaft until the switch mounting bracket contacts the mounting bosses on the transmission.
  2. Install the switch and tighten the switch retainers. Tighten the switch retainers to 20 ft. lbs. (27 Nm).
  3. Remove the adjustment tool.
  4. Engage the electrical connector and install the control lever to the manual shaft.
  5. Install the control lever nut and tighten to 20 ft. lbs. (27 Nm).
  6. Lower the vehicle and connect the negative battery cable.
  7. Check the switch for proper operation. The vehicle should start in P or N only.
  8. If adjustment is required, loosen the switch retaining bolts and rotate the switch slightly, tighten the bolts and check switch operation.

What is the location of the neutral safety switch on a 2001 Saab 9.3 convertible. Is it a difficult repair with the right tools.

I'm not sure what you mean by "neutral safety switch". I have the shop manual for this car (I also have a 2001) and there is nothing listed under "neutral" or "safety" or "switch" in the index that looks like it.
