1. Special open sided socket to thread the wires I do not know you size but they are available at most auto stores
2. Torch to heat the pipe! O2 sensors are under tremendous heat and the exhaust pipe needs to be heated around the O2 sensor to expand the pipe so you can get the old O2 sensor off.

to set you up here-- there are 4 oxygen sensors in the system
2 are heated oxygen sensors (HO2S) on in each exhaust manifold or exhaust pipe before the cat converter and
2 oxygen sensors (O2S) -- one in each exhaust pipe after the cat converters
heated oxygen sensors have 4 wires and O2S sensors normally only 2 wires
it is more that possible that you changed the wrong sensors and in the process damaged the delicate wires with the incorrect spanner being used

How to change upstream o2 sensor on 2008 chevy uplander 3.9l ?

  • 1 Warm up the engine for about four minutes to bring it to operating temperature. Then turn off the engine. This will avoid damage to the exhaust pipe threads if that sensor has seized to the pipe.
  • 2 Find the oxygen sensor or sensors you need to replace. The upstream sensor is located near the exhaust manifold and the downstream sensor on the back exhaust pipe, close to the catalytic converter.
  • 3 Disconnect the oxygen sensor electrical connector. Depending on your particular Chevy model, both sensors may be disconnected from the engine compartment.
  • 4 Lift the front of your Chevy model to reach the sensor you need to change, if necessary. Use a floor jack and two jack stands to support it.
  • 5 Remove the oxygen sensor using a box-end wrench or a ratchet and oxygen-sensor socket.

    Replacing the O2 Sensor 1 usually takes care of the problem

    The front heated oxygen sensor (or O2 sensor 1) is placed into the exhaust manifold. It detects the amount of oxygen in the exhaust gas compared to the outside air. The heated oxygen sensor 1 has a closed-end tube made of ceramic zirconia. The zirconia generates voltage from approximately 1V in richer conditions to 0V in leaner conditions. The heated oxygen sensor 1 signal is sent to the Engine Control Module (ECM). The ECM adjusts the injection pulse duration to achieve the ideal air-fuel ratio. The ideal air-fuel ratio occurs near the radical change from 1V to 0V.

    How do you change o2 sencer on 1999 intrepid

    The 1999 Dodge Intrepid uses two oxygen sensors, one on each of the two exhaust manifolds. Determine which oxygen sensor is faulty before changing the sensors by having the computer in your Intrepid scanned for codes. Most major auto parts retailers will scan the computer free of charge on the hope that you will buy the parts needed from them. If you need to replace both of the oxygen sensors, the process is the same for both sides so you can just repeat it after the first one is complete.

    Raise the front of your Intrepid with a jack and support the car with a set of jack stands positioned under the frame. Remove the jack from under the car and out of the way for now.

    Locate the oxygen sensor from under the car. Looking up into the engine compartment--the sensor is on the outboard side of the exhaust manifold pointing out toward the fender. This location is the same for both oxygen sensors, just on opposite sides of the car.

    Locate the wiring harness connector by following the wiring pigtail from the sensor down the wires until you see the connector. Lift the locking tab slightly on the connector and separate the two halves of the connector. Lay the wires aside and return to the oxygen sensor.

    Turn the oxygen sensor counter-clockwise with an oxygen sensor socket and ratchet until it is loose, then remove it from the exhaust pipe. Discard the old sensor and thread the new oxygen sensor into the exhaust pipe by hand to start with. This will help avoid cross threading the sensor and exhaust pipe.

    Tighten the oxygen sensor to 20 ft.lbs. with a torque wrench and oxygen sensor socket. Plug the wiring pigtail from the new sensor into the wiring harness connector on the car. Push the two halves together until the locking tab engages and the halves are secure.

    Repeat the process for the other sensor if you are changing both. Raise the front of your Intrepid off the jack stands with a jack, remove the stands from under the car and lower the car to the ground.

    Locate the two oxygen sensors on either side of the Sonata's catalytic converter on the exhaust manifold. The Sonata's oxygen sensor is gold and shaped liked a spark plug.

  • 4 Apply the anti-seize compound to the threads of the Sonata's two new oxygen sensors.
  • 5 Install the two new oxygen sensors to the Sonata's manifold using the oxygen sensor wrench. Re-attach the wiring harness to the two new oxygen sensors using your fingers.

    Hello, Eventually your Chrysler Sebring's oxygen sensor will go bad and need to be replaced. The oxygen sensor regulates the oxygen-to-fuel ratio in your vehicle. It also controls your gas mileage. It senses when more or less oxygen needs to be pumped into the fuel lines. If it fails, your Sebring will run poorly and won't get very good gas mileage. Knowing how to change it yourself can save your money. Here are the instruction to change o2 sensors.
    Locate your Sebring's oxygen sensor on the pre-catalytic converter. This is located near the front right wheel well of your vehicle. Apply some anti-seize paste to the threads of the new oxygen sensor. Be careful not to get any of the paste on the sensor itself, or it will be ruined. This makes for easy removal of the sensor next time.Remove the old oxygen sensor, using the 7/8-inch wrench. Find the stock sensor wire near the engine-loop lift. This will be by the firewall of your Chrysler Sebring. Splice the stock sensor wire and connect it to the new oxygen sensor's wire, using crimp connectors.Remove the large air-intake pipe that runs from the air box to the rear turbo. Then remove the two smaller air pipes that run from the air box to the blowoff valves. This will give you access to the oxygen sensor. Soak the old oxygen sensor in WD-40 to loosen it. Screw in the sensor by hand. Use the wrench to fully tighten the oxygen sensor so it cannot be removed by hand. Replace the air pipes to the correct valves again.

    Engine codes are 12, 51,21,53,55 can someone tell me what these codes are. engine is running extremely rich.

    12 is battery has been disconnected recently, or went dead.
    51 is Oxygen sensor stuck on lean mixture reading
    21- no change in oxygen sensor reading
    53- internal problem with logic module
    55- is end of message/codes.

    51 & 21, basically telling you same thing, but I wouldn't jump at changing oxygen sensor first, as a bad M.A.P. sensor can cause a rich mixture, thus oxygen sensor switches to lean to try and compensate. Personally, I'd go with map sensor first, check connections and vacuum lines if all good, replace it, then I'd go to oxygen sensor .
