Overheating my engine overheats when i am driving with the heater on.Then when i turn the fan off the temp drops plus there is no heat

Hi my name is Allen!

If both sides of heater core hoses or to hot to hold on too then your heater is OK, but if one is to hot too hold on to and the other is just warm and you can keep holding it then you have a restricted heater core.

NOTE: If both or to hot too hold, then you have a door problem. If you change the temp door and air flow feel the same, then you could have either a bad motor or a broken door.

NOTE: We have seen a lot of broken doors on this year model, if you can reach the motor for the temp door and take it off. Then you can turn the lever and if it keeps turning you have a broken door.

The first thing to check is the coolant level, if the coolant is full and the heater core hose is extremely hot to touch, then you may have a door problem. 2002 Grand Caravan. The rear heater also has a resistor for the fan speed control.(3 speed) It is located under the rear passenger side plastic cover. You can take off the rear tail gate lower plastic piece and this will let you pull out the side panel. You can reach in and take out the two screws that hold in the resistor and unhook the wiring adapter. You do not have to take off the whole side panel as you can reach in from the back. The resistor unit can be bought at you local dodge dealer.

Hi, could be a blocked heater coil. Though I doubt it.

Some more info would be helpfull, but i'll try to give some help.

firstly, is the fan clutch working? it;ll look as though it is, and still spin the fan, but if you stand near the engine with the engine running and hood open and don't feel a force of air blowing out of the engine bay then the fan clutch could be weak. A way to test this is to very carefully and slowly try to stop the fan turning using a broom handle. if the fan clutch is working, then it;ll just kick the broom handle out of the way. you won't be able to stop it. If it isn't working, you'll be able to continue to place the broom handle and the fan will stop turning. as simple as that. If the fan clutch is faulty, you're engine will overheat. Especially at stop lights, parked with the engine running, and it'll kick out your coolant when you turn the engine off after it's hot.

secondly, if fan clutch ok, turn air con off and run engine. then turn air con on and see if the electric fan comes on immediately. With air con on, the electric fan should come on straight away. If not, the electric fan is faulty, and this could be a fuse, relay, or switch, or even the fan itself.

thirdly, if this is only occuring when you run at constant speed, and not at idle after a while, then there's a blockage in the coolant circulation. The radiator may need flushing, or the hose is getting kinked. Under vacuum, the hose can collapse and stop the circulation making the engine overheat as it gets hotter at high rev. sometimes, there are coils in the hoses to prevent this, and you may be missing one or two. These are usually at elbows where the hose connects to the engine, radiator.

Lastly, head gasket or crack in the head. check the spark plugs. If they look too clean, like they've been steamed clean, then you may have coolant leaking into the combustion chamber. At higher revs, this will cause heat and pressure buidup in the coolant system, eventually leading to overheating at speed. The crack/leak may only become more prevalent at higher revs, thus higher pressure. Even the slightest/smallest leak can cause this problem at speed but not at idle.

Good luck. Check the components first. Make sure the fans are working, then check the hoses for coils, and then the spark plugs. spark plugs should have a little carbon buildup. If it's the crack or gasket, then the plugs will look too clean. It may only be one plug/cylinder, so check them all.

Some things to check - make sure that the radiator fan is coming on at the right temperature. It might not be turning on at all due to a blown fuse or a bad fan relay. Also, when the engine is up to temperature make sure the thermostat is opening up properly and be sure the radiator itself is not clogged. When the engine begins to overheat, turn the heater on (full heat, highest blower speed) and see if you get hot air and the engine temp begins to come down. This will tell you of the coolant is circulating properly.

Have a 2008 Land Rover LR2. The temp gauge shoots irratically high and the overheat light comes on. And then it will go back to normal temp after I turn the heat all the way up. While this should help...

Hi,

The overheating and lack of cabin heat both point to a failed engine thermostat which would be stuck closed. At the warm up stage, the coolant stays in the engine block to bring the engine to efficient operating temperature, then it opens and circulates the coolant through the radiator and heat core. If the thermostat is stuck closed, the engine will overheat, and coolant will never reach the heater core, and you will not get cabin heat.

Blinking oil light at idle which goes away during driving could be a low oil level, but may also be a drop in oil pressue. You could have a clogged oil fliter (at best) pickup tube, or a failing oil pump.

Would the heater control valve malfunctioning make the engine overheat blowing hot air out the heater one moment,then not blowing the hot air, temp gage spikes 225 plus. The motor takes awhile to heat up...


Heater control valve malfunction will not cause engine to overheat unless coolant is leaking externally...Overheating going down the road can be the result of a few different things...Partly clogged radiator...Insufficient air flow due to possible fan problem...External coolant leak...Make sure fans are operting properly and have cooling system pressure tested for leaks...Gaining and losing heat on the inside of the vehicle usually means system is low on coolant but you must find out where coolant is going

Engine temp drops when the a/c or heat is


The engine temp drops because the fan turns on regardless of heat or a/c. During summer of course with warmer weather it will be at a steady temp unless you the gets overheated by radiator or blown head gasket

air pockets in the cooling system can cause this problem. idle engine with radiator cap removed for 10 -15 min. Do not let engine overheat and make sure coolant lvl is topped off. this should bleed all air from system.

2002 kia sportage temp gauge runs hot while driving


Cheak to see that the coolant fan is operating with the A/C turned on. The fan has to work to help the engine stay cool and help the A/C. When you apply heat on the control it acts to reduce the coolant temp. You will have to get the coolant fan operation checked. This can be :fan motor, fan relay, temp sensor and computer. Good luck
