SOURCE: 1996 dodge ram 2500 van alternator not charging battery

do a continuity test from the large red wire on your alt to the battery, could be a fusible link or broken wire, sometimes a wire will break within the sheathing so it won't be visible by eye, check all conections for corrosion and either clean or repair

Battery light coming on. After turning van off, would not start

Your description makes me believe that your alternator is faulty. The system not charging turns the battery light on. The van will not start because the battery is discharged from powering the electronics that should have been powered by the alternator. Start by charging the battery to a full charge, and then test or have the alternator tested.

sounds like you need to have the alternator checked, if it were the instrument cluster the van would still run, you may still have a problem with the cluster, but the running 2 miles and the battery going dead is the charging system, you may have two problems. fix the charging system first then worry about the dash.

When going to start the van it just clicks ...if you keep doing it might start then or the clicking just continues...thanx

Either you have a dead battery or the battery ground cable is not making a good connection with the battery. Remove, clean and reinstall. This condition will also affect the charging system which will prevent a deep and proper charging of the battery.

Need battery size for 1996 Dodge Caravan

your cars battery might only need charging or battery acid replacement, but if you'd realy wish to buy new one, buy one with the same size and voltage and amps as the one you have right now, or you could buy a battery with the same voltage with a higher amppere-hour (Ah) rating!
