Question about Nissan Sentra

2000 saturn sl1 has trouble starting. the lights and everything work i have to keep at the ignition turning the key for mintes to get it to start. what could the problem be?

This is a canister oil filter system.
It's located up front of the engine on the right side. It's half way down and it has a Black Plastic Cap. It's takes a big socket to unscrew. I can't remember what size, maybe 1 1/4.

Check for intake manifold leaks and carbon in EGR pipe and EGR.

Check for

vacuum leaks on intake manifold,

the air tube between the air filter.

intake manifold vacuum hose.

clean throttle plate with Berryman carburator cleaner

Also remove carbon built up behind the EGR valve and the EGR passage tube.

===

Vacuum leak WILL offset the intended 14.7 to 1 air fuel ratio.

More un-metered air (leaks) will lean out the fuel mixture.

Use small amount of Berryman carb clearer at potential air leak area will help you identify trouble spot.

At idle,just spray and listen for the RPM surge.

The in-rush of carb clearer will increase the RPM on the motor.

Record the problem spot(s) and address it later.

EGR carbon built up require 2+ hours to clean from start to finish.

You will need a new EGR base gasket before your start.

Locate and remove the EGR valve after the vehicle is cool down.

Carefully record the connector and vacuum line (for older vehicle) location by drawing an easily to follow diagram.

Remove the EGR valve.

Inspect the location of the carbon built-up inside the valve and the EGR passage tube.

SOAK these areas with WD-40 spary.

You will need a small screwdriver,cloth hanger and lot of newspaper and time to get this cleaning done right.

RE-SOAK the carbon and let it sit for over-night will also help.

One the last round,pass a shop vacuum of the EGR valve and the passage pipe.

Install the new EGR gasket and connectors.

Allow the vehicle to warm up outdoor to burn up any remaining WD-40.


Take it for a test drive.

Will not start but turns over


Check if security light is on, if so, must reset. To reset, put key in ignition and turn to on position. Security light will start flashing on and off. Leave key in on position until security light stops flashing and turns off completely. This will take approximately 10 minutes. Then turn key off and take out of ignition. 2001saturn sl1 will not start everytime. battery is good, replaced neutreul saftey swich and same problem still occurs. will start then turn the car off and try to start again it wont.


Hello: This could be a pass-lock problem. If the security light is flashing you may have to replace the ignition lock cylinder and housing.

97 saturn SL2 turns over but sometimes doesn't start. Turning the key off and then trying again usually works. Yesterday it wouldn't fire until just when I started to turn the key off, then it caught. Any...


This problem usually doesn't show up on diagnostic, it is a problem that saturn has with many of it's cars, it is either the ignition module or the crank sensor, I think replacing the crank sensor would be your best bet, that is what was wrong with mine and I didn't find that out until I replaced the fuel filter, the fuel pump, the ignition module and the coils, trust me, go with the crank sensor.

it is possible that its set to do that,its called a afterblow option,so it turns off and on byitself as a way of keeping the evap core dry,,may be normal

WEIRD PROBLEM


On my girlfriends sl1 the engine would not turn over at all and I took the starter off and it was fried! I replaced it and it started right away, but I never had a problem with the lights not coming on.

Warning bell does not turn off


Probable bad switch, whether it's the ignition switch or light switch or other I'm not sure. I'd start by checking TSB's (Technical Service Bulletins) through Saturn; they shouldn't charge you to check their database for this problem. I know GM had the same problem. May also be the control module that interfaces all of these various warning systems with the main computer. Referred to a "body control module" or something similar.
