Question about 2001 Chevrolet S-10

I checked my coolant level in my radiator. the

It was not overheating. i had drove all day on my p.t. job at the post office. so all day non stop for about 5 hours. when i checked and saw the "chocolate milk" a then checked the over flow container. it also was full of the "choco. milk. it had, however, sludge in it. what could this be?

    i changed the oil this weekend, and there was no water in it. just nice and dirty like it should be at oil changing time. changed the ****** fluid, filter and gasket. no water there either. there looked to be a small oil leak to the front of the oil pan, however, i couldnt change the gasket because i didnt have a long enough extension. so next oil change, it will go to the shop. interesting, because it has not been using any oil ! i am not blowing white smoke. two weeks ago, i had it smoged, and it passed. the guy told me it was running good. (it has 165,000 miles.)

My 2004 3.4 liter impala had this problem.I found out the Rad. overflow tank was leaking Rad fluid out of the overflow nozel on the tank.I pluged the overflow nozel and added a hole in the tank cap.filled the tank to the proper level and bleed the air out of the Rad.(plug on rigid tube of engine, pull plug til fluid comes to top while running)never had another problem over heating again.

check the radiator cap if the rubber seal is dry rotted or torn this will cause the radiator to not build pressure properly so the fluid can flow properly.also check to make sure there is no air in the system.please rate this

SOURCE: temperature gage stopped working. Vehicle does not

Replace the tempurature sending unit,and see if that fixes the problem,if not install a new gauge.

My Nissan urban keeps overheating after it got overheated what could be the cause


Cooling fans not turning on, check to make sure the cooling fans are running when overheating occurs. Not enough coolant in the cooling system, check the coolant reservoir make sure the coolant is at at the maximum level when combustion engine is completely cool,if your coolant is low add coolant to the maximum level. (1)Start combustion engine, let it warm up but not over heat. Turn off combustion engine, when it cools completely the coolant reservoirs level will be lower . Add more coolant and keep repeating (1) until the coolant level stays the same after combustion engine completely cools down.Sensor that tells the cooling fans to turn on defective. So you drove the vehicle with the power to the fan and it overheated and was discharging coolant?

After you have drained coolant and then refilled, you have to 'burp' the system to remove airlocks. There are videos if you Google 'burping vehicle radiator'. Basically you run the vehicle from cold with the radiator cap off and add coolant as the level drops. When the thermostat opens the level will rise and fall. There is a gadget that you can fix to the top of the radiator cap that you fill and the level is maintained. You can help the process by squeezing the lower and upper radiator hoses. The system must be full of coolant with no air. Then you turn the engine off, top up one last time, replace the cap and then top up the reservoir.

engine running too hot.check coolant level, should be 50/50 antifreeze and water.replace thermostat and radiator pressure cap.check antifreeze level in the radiator,coolant level should be just below radiator cap, add coolant to overflow jug,should alway be at the full cold mark.empty coolant overflow jug will allow air be drawed in the coolant system causing overheating.if overheating happens when coming to a long stop.could have faulty engine coolant temperature sensor or bad coolant fan fuse or relay.

Cooling system


Raise the car front end as high as possible with a floor jack, fill the coolant tank to the top, run the engine until it reaches just short of overheating, shut it down and run water over the radiator, this will burp the air out. Repeat as needed. Don't let the coolant recovery tank run dry during procedure.

white smoke usually means blown head gaskets,have radiator fan checked,water pump,check coolant for oil in coolant,could be blown in between cylinders,causing coolant to go out exhaust,have compression check done on cylinders.

No, you can't add too much coolant. Rather, it does not hurt anything if you do. Did you add it to the radiator, or to the overflow tank?

Let it cool, then remove the radiator cap, and if needed, add coolant to the radiator. Put the cap back on, and fill the overflow tank to the "full - cold" line. Start it and run it a few minutes and look for leaks. If you find no leaks, drive it for a day or two, then let it cool and check it again. If it is down a lot (without overheating), you have a leak somewhere. If you lose enough coolant, that will make it overheat. However, if it overheats, that can cause loss of coolant, when you stop the car, you will see steam and smell coolant, and often hear it boiling.

If it overheats again, make note of when it happens: driving on the highway, or stop-and-go around town. Overheating on the highway usually indicates a clogged radiator, while in-town overheating usually indicates a bad cooling fan (you don't need the fan above about 30 MPH). A bad fan is usually the fan relay, but it can be the fan thermostat (different from the engine thermostat), or a bad fan motor.

I have a 1995 Pontiac Grand Prix GTP 3.4L DOHC....... The engine is over heating (yes it has coolant in it).... and I had noticed a leak in the coolant so we replaced the radiator (which had a hole in it)...


REPLACE THERMOSTAT TO BE ON THE SAFE SIDE.IF YOU PUT NEW RADIATOR IN MORE LIKELY YOU NEED TO BLEED COOLANT SYSTEM CHECK COOLANT LEVEL WHEN ENGINE COOLS DOWN. YOU HAVE AIR IN COOLANT SYSTEM.AIR WILL EXPEL AND COOLANT LEVEL DROPS ADD MORE COOLANT UNTIL YOU HAVE RIGHT AMOUNT COOLANT IN RADIATOR.DONT DRIVE CAR UNTIL COOLANT SYSTEM BLEED.WHEN THERMOSTAT OPENS TURN OFF ENGINE WAIT A WHILE THEN CHECK COOLANT LEVEL KEEP ADDING UNTIL COOLANT LEVEL STOP DROPPING IN RADIATOR. USE LARGE RAG OVER RADIATOR CAP TO KEEP FROM GETTING SCALDED BUT WAIT UNTIL COOL DOWN ENOUGH SO YOU WONT GET SCALDED.

I have the same exact problem and 2003 4cyl.and same year car....


You may have had an air pocket in the system. What I would when you get part,is to run at idle with radiator cap off and let warm up from cold start. With heater setting on so as coolant can flow through that part of system. Of course keep eye on temp as it warms up. This can take a while as fans won't come on till thermostat is opening. check hoses as it warms. when hoses get "hot to touch" both upper and lower , put cap on and make sure overflow bottle is filled to its level.If it all seems to be going well then i would let fans cycle for 2 may be 3 time before test drive.

Overheating and change engine oil ... oil was changed one week ?


it seems like the radiator of your car needs attention. check for coolant level in it, when its cold. if les add some coolant and then see if the problem persists.
--than there are chances of chocking in the coolant pipes, may be they not reached to engine..  
--Check the chock,, that it is not turned on. 
--May be sum loosing nut in engine.

Overheating


Going through the same thing with my 2000 2.7 l intrepid.

Thermostat, water pump, plugged radiator, blown head gasket? I tinker with autos, but on a very basic level.

My story and course of action (that you may be able to glean some ideas from)
I live in NW Indiana, and was on vacation on ease coast. Noticed water/antifreeze leaking from vehicle in a New Jersey Rest stop. Don't believe car was overheating at the time, but possible that I drove the car for up to a mile in this state.

Had vehicle towed to a local garage (Friday afternoon, so thought garage and not dealer was best option for geting back on the road asap).

Garage diagnosed water pump, and replaced it ($750 US). Said there was some antifreeze in oil, so engine flushed oil system, coolant, replaced oil filter, and refilled oil and coolant.

Car operated fine for 1 week of pretty hard driving (both local and highway driving, and then rather large hills in Maine). Then on way home, near Erie PA, car overheated on Toolway. Noticed overheating pretty quickly, within 1/2 mile.

Towed off of tollway, where refilled Coolant (added about a quart). Drove car around local town for 10 - 15 minutes, with no problems. No sweet smell from tailpipe (that would indicate possible head gasket leak), no antifreeze apparent on oil dipstick, and no visible coolant leak on or under engine, so drove on US 20 into Erie, going both 35 mph ;local, and 55 mph between-town driving. No problems. Stopped at place to eat in Erie, gave car a chance to cool down to check coolant levels. No leaks (external anyways) and coolant level where I left it.

Started again, and after approx. 3 - 4 miles of driving, car overheated (almost instantaneous going from normal temp to overheating (noticed it within a block). Overheated 1 block from Dodge dealer on Sun. afternoon. Let car cool down, ensured coolant full, and drove to hotel 2 miles away for night (no problems with overheating, but car may not have gotten back up to temp in those 2 miles- was approx 65 Deg Far ambient. Noticed that when the car does "act up" and heads for overheating, the vents blow cold, even though set for high heat.

Got to Dodge dealer the next morning. Dealer said no external leaks, and no mixing of oil and antifreeze (mixing could indicate blown head gasket). Diagnosed thermostat ($340 for parts and labor), and would be fixed in 3.5 hours. 8 hours later, dealer said finally had thermostat changed, but still overheating. Would try to reblead air out of the cooling system (air or air pockets in the system could cause overheating). Still no luck - car was overheating. So dealer said next thought would be partially plugged radiator. Plan- next morning, send radiator out for testing.

Well, radiator was sent out, and some gunk was found and cleaned from radiator
($225 US), but dealer said was not enough to be causing the problems I was getting. Next guess was to check the water pump, at $700 -$800 labor to see if it was defective. Dealer said, but I have not confirmed, that car would idle fine for unlimited time without overheating, but when took out for drive, it would overheat. The cooling fan was functioning properly.

Well, at that stage, decided to just tow car home, and fix there so I rented UHAUL truck and tow dolly ($350 US), plus the gas such a vehicle consumes.

Take to NW Indiana garage, and they say,

check water pump to see if defective ($650), replace water pump if defective, and if not defective, pull heads to inspect for blown head gasket (an additional $450 labor). Said exhause gases could be internally leaking into the coolant (because bad head gasket) and causing the car to overheat. Said may consider just putting in a used engine- may be cheaper. Well I know the previous owner, and the car was maticulously kept, so I say I need to think it over. Drove car home (about 2 miles) and coolant temp gage didn't budge an inch- coolant level was fine, so who knows what happened to it...

Checked from garage that replaced the water pump, and said it was a dealership new waterpump that was installed, with all new gaskets, and did NOT replace timing chain.

Go and talk to dad (aren't dad's great!). Dad has rebuild many motors in his day- was a millright who completly rebuilt from scratch Model A's , 1940's sedans, and some cars in the 1970s and 1980s. Successfully rebuilt 2 automatic transmissions in the 70s and 80s as well. Dad's getting up in age (mid seventies) so didn't want to burdeon him, just wanted his input. He said, consider water pump, but he seemed to remember a test you could do on the coolant to check for exhaust gases. After trips to 4 local Auto parts stores (some "fake" ones like Autozone, and a couple real ones), found a guy who knew of the test, and ordered one for me. So, for $40, hopefully will be able to see if there are exhaust gases in the coolant, indicating a blown head gasket.

Will have to make some decisions based on test results. Have about $1600 or so in car already. May try to do work myself- who knows!

Just trying to explain my overheating issues, and giving some insight into potential causes, and remedies that were explored in my case so they may be of help with you.
