Question about 2009 Toyota Matrix

Open Question

I just need to replace a burnt out brake light bulb but I can't get at or reach the old bulb. How do I get it out?

Do I take off the outer cover to get at the light bulb or do I have to work at it from inside the car?

On my 2000 Jeep Grand Cherokee, the passenger side brake light comes on but the tail light does not come on when the lights are on. It's the same bulb. Any suggestions?

  • First have you tried a new bulb? That the first recommendation. It's cheap, easy to replace, and narrows things down a bit.

  • Sometimes in the bulb socket one of the three terminals in the bulb socket gets a little bent and has to be bent back out so it makes contact otherwise the signal of braking will not reach the filament and the regular tail light remains no matter what.

  • Should you inspect / try that tip and this problem remains then you may need to replace that one socket. Make sure all continuity and grounds test out first. That's about all there is to that.

  • If you have any comments please feel free to leave them here.
  • Hope this helps and thank you for using FixYa.

Tip

One Brake Light Not Working

Inspect Brake Light Bulb: The number one reason for a brake light operation failure is a failed brake light bulb. To check this condition access the bulb by removing the rear cover located in the trunk or rear compartment. Some cars allow you to remove the entire brake light lens to retrieve the brake light bulb. Once the bulb has been removed inspect the bulb filament. If it looks broken or if the bulb is smoked the bulb needs to be replaced. If you have replaced the bulb but it still doesn't work remove the bulb. With the key in the "on" position have someone hold their foot on the brake pedal and use a grounded test light to carful test the terminals inside the light socket. One of the terminals should illuminate the test light. (Note: Do not touch the outer metal ring that holds the bulb in place for it is grounded and can blow the system fuse if connected to the inner terminals.) If the test light illuminates reinstall the brake light bulb. While the brake pedal is depressed test the outer metal ring that holds the bulb, if power is present the ground lead from the light socket is bad. If the outer ring does not illuminate the bulb has failed and replacement is required.

Scan BCM for Trouble Codes: Some cars are equipped with a body control module or BCM this onboard computer controls and lighting signals and can malfunction not allowing the electrical current to continue to the brake light circuits. This condition is rare but it can happen. If you have performed all of the tests above and all results are positive scan the BCM for trouble codes if no codes are present try replacing the BCM.

Only one of the window brake lights work and the rest don't, i checked the bulbs and they seem to be ok.

If the light sockets are not burnt try new bulbs, even if the old ones appear fine.

Replacing map light bulb in 2008 honda ridgeline

For the front map lights - gently pry the cover down using a very small screwdriver. The outer-edge (left or right) should be last. the inner portion is where the cover pivots and snaps in.
Once the cover is removed, just unplug the bulb and replace. It is a tube-style bulb...it kind of looks like an old style fuse.

Rear tail and brake lights out 97 Jetta

I believe this car has a bulb with two fillaments for side and brake lights, it is unlikely that they are both burnt out at the same time but possible. It is more likely that the bulb holder or a ground connection is rusted or loose. The fuse generally covers all rear lights.

No brake lights 1990 ford f 150

First, check fuses. If the fuse for tail and brake lights is OK, check the bulbs. If they are OK, you need a new brake light switch, which attached to the brake pedal under the dash. The part should be less than $20. These are a common replacement item on older fords.

  3. Remove the socket from the lens by releasing the locking tab and twisting
  4. Once the bulb and socket are pulled from the rear of the lens, grasp it from behind the license plate opening
  5. Then, pull it out of the side and replace the bulb
