How do I decrease idle speed?

The higher idle speed is part of the "cold start" sequence. It is controlled by the thermostat and a temperature sensor. You may need to change them both for faster action.

Why does my2004 gmc envoy xl slt idle high at startup?

This is normal. All vehicles idle high at start up to get the engine to operating temperature. This is known as open loop. The computer ignores signals from O2 sensors to keep your engine running safely. Once it has warmed up, it will enter closed loop, and you will see a decrease in idle.

I have a 1990 S-15 with 4.3 motor idles high when you start, idles down , set and idle for a while it starts idling up and down.any idea's?

Could be a faulty idle air control valve.
The computer controls idle speed by regulating how much air enters the throttle body thru the valve.
You could unplug the valve when the idle speed is close to normal, then shut the engine off and restart to see if the idle speed is still in the same place. Unplugging the valve will also set a trouble code and turn the warning light on.

Chevy Malibu Cold Idle Problem

Check the water coolant thermostat. If it is stuck in the "open" position you are heating up all the water in the coolant system and this will take time. The thermostat keeps the water in the engine until warmed up to almost normal running temperature, only then does it allow the coolant to enter the radiator.

I turn on ignition and vehicle starts to idle real high seems like accelarator cable is sticking

Hi Clucas, If you're talking about a cold engine, the vehicle is fitted with an automatic 'up idle' system. Depending on how cold the ambient temperature is. The colder it is outside the higher the idle, until the engine reaches normal operating temp. The engine should then settle down to the correct idle speed. If however the cold start raises the speed to more than 1350, have a scan carried out. If the idle speed is always at a high rpm, do the same.A leakage of air into the intake manifold can also cause the latter problem. A leakage however will not be evident via a scan. Need to know how to rewire the evo3 maf to work in the vr4. Car works but is idling high and is not decreasing. I think it may be a prblem with the wiring??

A high idle is caused from a vacuum leak, check the vacuum hoses for cracks, worn against something, any elbows need checked, IAC (idle air control) you will hear a hissing sound, remove the intake tube just before the throttle body and listen for the IAC to close it won't draw as much air if it's working correctly, try cleaning the IAC with throttle body cleaner.

My 1998 Dodge Neon manual transmission DOHC idles high. WHY??

Without actually seeing the car, I would first look at the linkage and springs from the accelerator to the fuel intake. Could be as minor as dust build up or loose cable. Start with that, should that not fix the problem, try adjusting the idle set screw. Turning it clockwise will increase idle, counter clockwise will decrease. Try to have idle around 500-600rpm.

Miss fires. jerks when de-accelerating. idle increases then decreases

when all else fails replace the ignition module on the distributor. As it fails it will cause high idle and other symptoms. Does the problem only happen when the engine is hot?
