Question about Oldsmobile Alero

Oldsmobile stalls/idles rough under 1,100 rpm. Otherwise runs fine while driving.

At 100,000 miles the idle became noticeably rougher. No performance or gas mileage was lost. The idle steadily became worse over the next 30,000 miles until the engine would stall when you would stop at a red light (while in 'drive' with pressing the brake). The engine miss and shudder is VERY violent now. The only way to keep the car from stalling is to shift into 'neutral' and keep pressing the throttle to keep the rpm over 1,100. I have checked for/fixed any vacuum leaks, replaced: coils, coil pack housing, spark plugs, spark plug boots, intake manifold gasket, throttle body gasket, IAC, air filter (K&N), timing chain (it was out of tolerance - just time to do it), new battery, both O2 sensors. It threw a "P0300" random misfire code and O2 (amber light) on OBDII, but no longer shows codes or lights after repairs, but harsh idle/stalling problem still happens. One odd thing is that the "TRAC OFF" dash light will come on sometimes without provocation - even in PARK. Any and all help is greatly appreciated!

Oh the fun of throwing parts at a car! i feel you ive been there before. have you tried testing the ignition modual? checked to make sure its getting fuel right? it could have a seized injector body. it could be a cam or crank sensor but usually those only run the ignition up to 500-900 rpms then the ECM takes over. other than that it kinda sounds like you may be loosing cylinders. you might try a compression test. i know this isnt a solution per say but ive been stuck before i know fresh ideas can help

2004 dodge ram 1500 hemi 5.7 engine dies when stopping, or idles irradic at low speeds when accelarating


Check/clean the MAP sensor and throttle position sensor. This should fix the issue. Its a common problem with Chrysler products.

Car Stalls at low speed. Restarts. DTC Code 0340 and 1167


The codes you provided indicate separate issues. Code 1167 is indicative of either a stuck fuel injector of the O2 sensors. Code 0340 indicates the CMP position sensor. Replacing the O2 sensors will likely clear the 1167 code assuming the fuel injectors are okay. It would be the first course of action. If there's no noticeable change in performance (i.e. stalling problem continues) then the CMP position sensor is likely your overall problem. Best of luck.

My car threatens to die during idling...the rpm drops down low and then goes back to normal. It started doing this during driving too. I just had the fuel filter and a few other fuel related things...


Here are the most common causes of surges, stalls at stops, low erratic idle speed, rough idle and engine hesitation, it is in most cases the idle speed control air-bypass valve and or throttle valve and upper intake, these area's get full of gunk and combustion residue over the miles and cause idle issues (stalls, low idle) like yours, Get a can of intake cleaner from any local parts store, not carb spray, intake cleaner, it is made by a company called CRC, remove the air intake hose to the engine, hold the idle high so the engine won't stall, then spray the can of cleaner into the intake while keeping the engine running, use at least 1/2 the can, shut down the engine and disconnect the battery for 5 minutes, then restart and complete a number of mixed driving cycles, town, freeway, stop and go etc., after a few days the problem will go away as the system will relearn to the clean intake.

hello first check your idle with the car running foot on brake see were your rpm reading is if your below 500rpm check your label underhood for your curb idle setting second see if theres a adjustment screw you can increase were your gas cable lever rest against your set screw underhood if you feel confident enough remove your iac motor idle air control valve if the bore were the end of the pintle extracts out to close has varnish builup our carbon it will stick creating vacuum leak type senario causing stalling rough idle sometimes even no start conditions good luck
