I had a simular issue and it ended up being the power lock switch was stuck on my liftgate. also could be the linkage is jammed/bent or the little plastic keepers that hold it together came apart

The latch in the middle of the tailgate is (or was) connected to the two latched on both ends of the tailgate that held the tail gate closed. Over the years, the two wires have become detached from the two...

You have to remove the handle assembly and the latches. Working through the hole where the handle is, work the throught the edge of the tailgate and fasten to the latch assembly, then install the latch assembly. Once both latch assemblies are connected, reintall the handle assembly.

1999 GMC Sierra truck tailgate release latches are broken and gate won't open?

If you remove the ring around the handle you will get a better view of the two rods that connect the handle to the outter latches. The ring just snaps in.I think a flat head screw driver from the bottom works the best.Once you have access to the rods you can push the inward twords each other to pop the gate.If the are broken out twords the tail lights then a thin flat head in the gap betwen the tail lights and tail gate should be able to push the spring loaded latches in to pop the gate, but you may need to borrow a extra set of hands.Well hope this helps.

My tailgate i must slam it to keep shut 2007 gmc sierra

If you remove the handle that opens the tail gate you will see two rods connecting to it. Each one goes to the latches that open at each side of the gate. Lube the latches up with a good grade of lithium grease after they soak for one day with WD40. They may work as good as new again if the rods are not bent out of shape. The rods are very inexpensive to replace also

My rear latch is broken. Any suggestions. I have been to two mechanics, no help, they reco the dealership, they are incompetent and rip off artists.I live in Panama so there is only one. Any suggestions...

you willl need to replace the cable for the rear latch. the cable end is broken. you will need to get in the cargo area. the pry off the rear carpet on the lower gate. if you pan on getting a new carpet trim on the lower gate then cut it off if not you will need to pull it away at the bottem of the tail gate. this will allow you to pull the carpet trim from under the top trim. you may need to use a thin 13mm wrench to remove the cable bracketsat the bottom of the gate where the plastic trim is around it. with the rear panel removed you grab the cable with somthing and pull the cable to open the gate. with in open replace the cable and maybe the accuator if it is not working.. but most of the time its the cable. hope this helps. send me a shout if you need more info

Tail gate problem

I believe there are one or more service bulletins out on the tail gate issue, so you are not alone. I have seen a vehicle with this issue. The bullitin states adjust latch/ do not replace. We tried to adjust 4 times and ended up installing a new latch to remedy.
