SOURCE: sqeualing noise comes from belts on cold days

It is your Belt Tensioner. You will need to Locate the Belt Tensioner. It has a Large Pulley on a Bracket that Has a Bolt in the Middle and a Smaller Pulley that Goes Under the Belt and Holds Tension on it. You will need to get a Wratchet, Socket, and Cheater Bar. Turn the Bolt On the Top Large Pulley with the Wratchet and Cheater Bar. This will Lower the Smaller Pulley So that you will be Able to Remove the Belt. and Replace the Tensioner Pulley Assembly. check the alternator belt tightness, alot of the problems are caused by this :)

listen for the noise with the bonnet up, think you will find its the alternator belt squeeking or maybe a tensioner :)

SOURCE: squealing noise coming from the belts while engine is running

take off your serp-belt and spin your water pump, alternator, idler pully and see what squeaks or feels rough. your water pump bearings may be bad. the only thing you can do is change it. dont forget to change your thermostat and antifreeze. FYI your antifreeze is made with lubricants in it for your water pump bearings.

Squealing noise

Sounds like one of your pulleys is bad. Alternator, water pump, don't know till you find it. You say you have more than one belt-try taking one off at a time, run engine for a couple of minutes and see if squealing goes away. Maybe you can isolate it that way.
If belts are off, you could spin each pulley by hand to see if you could catch the one that is bad. Any little wobble or play in any of the pulleys would be very suspect as the likely bad one.

I have a loud squealing noise upon starting the car. the squealing normally lasts about 30-45 seconds. sometimes the noise will appear aftrer pulling off from a stopped position, as well. all belts

Try to tighten the belts a little firm.Sounds like when engine idling no squelling only when about to take off .Some times belts may seem ok on the outside but if you look on inner side you tend to see cracks in the belts .

2000 montero sport: There's a loud squealing noise coming from the engine. What could be wrong?

Squealing is most common with loose or worn belts, I would start by replacing the drive belt on the front of the motor and go from there, Its easier to troubleshoot a squealing motor if you know that the belt or belts are good.

Squeeking belts

They are not tight enough. Find another mechanic, the first one is incompetent. There is also an anti squeal spray if you prefer that:

Loud squeeking noise when air is on

Depending on how many miles you have had your belts for,it may be time to replace them altogether. If you had them replaced recently it may just be a matter of adjusting your air conditioning belt. Your belts have tensioners which can be adjusted. To the best of my knowledge, the spectra you drive should have an adjustment for this belt on the bracket which holds the ac compressor. This is located behind the engine between it and the firewall. Your best bet is to try reaching it from underneath. If you cannot safely lift the car using jack stands and blocking the wheels. You should consider having this done by a professional since the belts should be set to a precise tension level to advoid excessive wear or belt failure. If you attempt to tackle this yourself, just make sure you do not over tighten the belts. You can check them by pushing on them with your finger WHILE THE ENGINE IS OFF!!!! They should have about a quarter inch of give with minnimal pressure applied. Once you are certain they are not too tight you can do a visual inspection with the engine running. The belts should circulate smoothly without looking wobbly and make very little noise or none at all. Good luck with your problem and if this has been going on for a while, just go ahead and spend on the new belts. The squealing sound is an indicator that your belts are slipping on the pulley and friction is wearing them down constantly.

Engine races ten resumes normal idle, also

you may have a worn or loose belt....if not it may be your waterpump squealing...your belts turn the pump...check and see if you have coolant dripping from under the front of the engine..thanks

Squeaking belt ?

If changing the belts didn't stop the problem, it may be a pulley that is making the squeak, not the belts. When belts age, they tend to form a glaze on the contact surface, which can cause slippage, or squeak, or squeal, also if engine fluids get on the belt due to leaks or spillage, it can cause a problem. If you feel it's definitely the belt(s) making the noise, check the belt tensioner for wear. There is usually an indicator (stamped on the tensioner) that shows if it is in need of replacement. If that's the case, it would not keep the belt(s) tight, and could cause them to slip and squeal. Let me know what you find, or if you have further questions. Curt
