Re: check engine light
Low power steering fluid wont but low power steering pressure can. there is a switch in the rack that sends messages to the pcm.the switch can be replaced separate from the rack.if the rack is leaking it needs replaced but if the switch is leaking it can be replaced separate.

could be that your rack and pinion is going out try draining the power sterring fluid and make sure you know how much came out and then put in some fulid and to top it off put in some Seafoam trans tune and drive it around for about 30 to 50 minutes and that should fix the problem it beats buying a new rack and pinion their expensive
Check the power steering fluid level. If the fluid level is low, you obviously have a leak somewhere and it should be repaired. If the level is up, watch the power steering pump while the engine is running; is the pulley turning freely? Power steering systems are hydraulic devices. The pump provides the pressure and the steering gear or rack and pinion assembly (depending on the vehicle type) applies pressure in the direction that you are turning the wheel to assist with the steering. When the hydraulics fail or when the internal components fail, your strength is the only thing turning the steering. But start with the fluid.
thats about right, but a 2005 needing a rack, it is possible but i would get a second garage to look , take it somewhere else, dont tell them you were told it needs a rack, just tell them you have a p/s leak. this way you have two estimates and you will know for sure its the rack.hope this helps.
when power steering is leaking. you need a new rack and pinion. you need to find out if you need it rough or smooth and prices vary pedending on make and model and the labor is extra. rack and pinions can run from $437 and up and that does not include labor. call a auto parts and ask them to look up a rack and pinion for the make and model of your car then you can call and see how much labor will cost but alot of places want you to buy the part from them which can be more expensive
Stay in the Car! LOL you have a problem with your power steering system. 1st Check your fluid level. 2nd check the belt. If you discover everything is ok, replace the power steering pump. That should fix it, however, if you still experience a problem, it will be in your rack and pinion. If you replace the rack and pinion you would want to change the pump anyway so no harm done. Good luck
