Question about 1999 Toyota 4Runner
The guage gets a earth signal from the sender ,, depending on the amount the guage rises accordingly ,, if the wire is touching earth any where the guage will go up to full,,,, disconnect the fuel sender and see does the guage drop,, it should if there is no short in the wiring ,,,,if it does drop you then have to recheck the sender ,,, if the guage stays full you have to check wiring for a short ,,,,, if you are able you could strip out the guage and disconnect the plug at the rear of it to make sure that the guage itself is not faulty,,,,

SOURCE: Sub Fuel Tank
Very Hard!!!! There are no specs on this, the only way out is to go to your nearest dealer and look at a sender unit and measure its resistance and compare the 2 sender units resistance. It should be measured in Kilo holms, the way to measure it is read the resistance when the floats at its 'lowest' point, and the resistance sould either increase or decrease when you move the float 'up', this depends on what resistance the fuelguage requires, to test if the fuel guage works,'take the positive cable that plugs into the sender unit, fuse it with a low ampeage fuse and connect it to body/chassis while key 'on' and check fuel guage, it must go to full position, there could be another problem, check cables for opencircuits, and check earth(-)connection to the sender unit, plse post to me for further assistance Mishdaman.....

the cable going from the gauge to the sender unit is an earth return. if you take it off the sender unit wire if the gauge does read hot the sender and earth it out the gauge should go to the hot segment.dont leave this cable to earth very long do it quickly. if the gauge does read it is ok, there is no earth to the petrol tank. if it does not read it will be faulty. hope this helps.

Yes you have to drop the gas tank, either that or pull off the bed. Once you do that you remove the sending unit from the tank. You may as well replace the fuel pump while your in there whether you need to or not. This way you save yourself from dropping the tank again.

Digital gauge also gets its input for fuel level from a float in the tank. Here the culprit can be that float because the error is systematic i.e., full on empty and empty on full/half. If the reading was erratic then it was something to do with IC in the bars display panel.
