Hi Ernest, It would help us to know more about the type of vehicle your are referring to. Is it a manual or automatic box? Is it fitted into a small passenger vehicle (a car) or is it a commercial vehicle? Is it front wheel drive or rear? Is it a two by four or four by four? In the event of it being a four by four, is it full time or is it selectable? A humming from the gear box will usually become more pronounced in one particular gear. If that is the case, the noise usually denotes a problem with the roller needle bearings for that particular gear. If the noise is in all gears it usually means that the problem is with the lay shaft bearing or that the gear assembly has been damaged in some way. If it is front wheel drive, the same diagnosis will apply, but added to it can be a problem with the differential (which is housed in the same housing as the gearbox. If the vehicle has a manual box, the thrust bearing can also give a humming sound sometimes when the clutch is pressed or sometimes when released. The test for that is simple. Start the engine push the clutch pedal and listen for any change in the sound. If the noise becomes more pronounced when the pedal is pressed the problem will likely be with the thrust bearing. If however the noise reduces or disappears with the same action, the problem is more likely to be with the input shaft bearing of the box. (The spigot shaft which is driven by the clutch plate or torque converter. If the vehicle is automatic The same may apply, or there may be a problem with the oil pump inside the box. These are just a few of the possible diagnostics for the limited info you have provided. The more you explain the more we can help! regards John

How do i check oil level in gearbox of suzuki swift 2009

Gearbox oil can't be checked because it is sealed and needs to be drained out and checked for metal parts if there is damage to the gears. Take your vehicle to an authorised service centre if you suspect it is the gear box. Humming noise may be something else- like less engine oil or a defective AC intake (blocked tray) or some loose vibration.

Why are the gears not engaging chev aveo 2006,manual transmission?

A true manual transmission is exactly that and has no connection to the dash board instruments, other than the speed sensor, which doesn't control the gearbox, but supplies the engine's ECU and dashboard with the relevant vehicle speed information. I can't think of any related reason as to why you should have a related instrument issue and gearbox issue. I would recommend the obvious which is to take the vehicle to an experienced mechanic/technician.

Humming noise gearbox on suzuki swift when running fisrt and second gear

incorrect oil levels are the main cause for this, it usually starts with low gear to high gear as the level don't reach the gears properly or the other thing to look at is mounting engine and gearbox as when tuque is high then mounts are under a lot of stress, then there's the exhaust system could be near something Re: Jeff

PrEngine is running, gearbox linkage can be seen moving looking down from engine - when driver puts lever into gear, gearbox not engaging - with or without clutch applied. Possible areas which could...

Unfortunately the problem will need investigating. There must be a problem with the flywheel / clutch assembly or the gearbox itself. The fact that you can move the gear linkage indicates that there is no drive in the gearbox ( ie not turning). The only items that effect this are the clutch / flywheel assembly or the primary shaft in the gearbox.
The gearbox will have to be removed and the above checked.

I purchased an hyundai terracan turbo 2.9 diesel 2003 last year. I was very impressed with its comfort, power etc. However I soon noticed an unusual noise arising from the engine while at a good speed...

this may be something you might check ? the fact that the noise sounds like humming? on rapid decelleration from speed ? as you release throttle from speed downhill the turbo revs drop off and pressured air is reduced into manifold ok ? but the engine speed/rotation is then driven by the drive from the roadwheels/transmission therefor the engine is vacuum caused by induction into manifold is still on increase but due to possible induction hose from turbo to manifold ? this hose may? be collapsing /sucking together thus creating air restriction to engine if this does happen ? then the symptom of labouring and sound of humming you describe may be what is happening? for your info the cause of over rev of engine especially on decelleration from high speed could cause the pistons to catch ip with the valves and bend them? this is a danger to avoid hope this helps?
