Question about 1998 Lincoln Continental
It would go back but not forward - checked the motor and it worked good
There may be some binding from twist in the seat back that is pinching the pivot points, dirt, or corrosiuon as well. If you can see the pivot points, some light silicone may be all it needs, it may show signs of having used lubriplate grease (white grease) if so, a slight application of some fresh ay be enough to alleviate the issue.
The motor may run fine in no load condition, but it may need new brushes, or it may have a few winds begining to short out. The only way to know is to try brushes first, and if that does not correct it, and the seat is not binding, replace the motor- it likely has some winds shorting. If none are available a motor winding shop should be able to evaluate it with a device called a "growler" to reveal if the armature is shorting.

The only way to solve this issue is to extract the seat and inspect. The front and back movement is different from the other actions that the seat may be able to do...
Look for damaged, dirty and miss aligned track components.

Testimonial: "It was helpful but my problem in taking the seat out is that it is stuck in the very extreme back position and i cannot get to the back nuts to remove"
The driver's seat in my 2001 Lincoln has a grinding sound when I try to move it forward (It's in the back position What is the problem?

SOURCE: the driver seat will not
how did you check the switch? if it moves all the other ways the forward and back still may be worn out. how did you check the motor for the forward and back? did you apply direct power to the motor and it worked?
