Question about Cars & Trucks

On the 97 V6 you'll also need a puller to remove the power steering pulley as this bolts to the water pump housing. This is unusual. Doing this now actually. You can rent the "puller" at autozone. Remember to disconnect the battery and drain the coolant before you get started. The rest is in the Haynes. It'll take time, but its not a hard job with the right tools.

Hello and thank you for using FixYa!
To replace the water pump, you will need to remove all the drive belts. Then there are 2 black covers on the front timing cover. One cover is for the chain tensioner, the other is for access to the water pump. I would recommend you replace the tensioner the same time you do the water pump. The reason is, you need to remove that tensioner so the chain has slack. When the chain has slack, you can then unbolt and pull the water pump out. It could get stuck, so there are bolts that you need that you would use to run in to pop the pump free.
Hope this helps , Thanks Jay!

First, keep a copy of this serpentine belt diagram to help you put it back on when you're done replacing the water pump...
Here's a link to a video by Advance Auto Parts on how to replace the water pump...

Unfortunately a diagram wouldn't tell you what you need to know. Step by step is too long to write (but it's not a difficult job).
I suggest you get a haynes manual or similar. it will be a big help and will save you $ later as well. Any questions you have while doing job can be answered here!
