Question about 2004 Chevrolet Malibu Maxx
The second, or the bank 2, catalytic converter, I believe I was told is rattling and causing the check engine light to come on. I'm trying to shop for it online and am seeing "right" and "left." Any idea which I need?

SOURCE: Engine code 430
did you use oem catalytic converters????? the aftermarket converters break down very fast. thats why they are cheap. we have to replace them all the time due to bad catalytic converters.

SOURCE: heat shield rattles
I wouldn't recommend removing it, as it's there to protect the area from the high heat of the cat. I've had the same rattle problem, and a piece of a coat hanger through a couple of holes drilled through the shield, then tightly attached solved the problem.

SOURCE: do I need a catalytic converter
Yes, depending on how bad the converter is. The converter can fall apart inside and all the pieces will then move to the muffler plugging the muffler. The result will be a plugged exhaust system. You can check to see if the exhaust is plugged by putting your hand in front of tail pipe and "feel" how much is coming out. Have someone "rev" the engine and you should be able to feel the exhaust from 2 to 3 feet away. Just so you know what normal is, do this with a different car first. If it's plugged you'll be able to tell. Good luck. Hope this helps.

The check engine light is probably indicating a catalytic converter malfunction the Oxygen sensor that is located after the cat tells the computer if the cat is functioning properly it is possible the wire has been broken or damaged. To see if the cat is there jack up the car and look under the passenger and driver area of the car follow the exhaust pipe from the front back the first thing the pipe comes to should be the cat it looks like a muffler with a wire going to a sensor after toward the back side of it, I doubt they never installed one but I guess it is possible.

SOURCE: service engine light came on
if u want a second opinion most auto stores such as auto zone / advanced auto will scan ur vehicle for free and the trouble code will tell u what component ,sensor or area of vehicle that is causing ur problem also with ur vehicle running u can feel for restriction in exhaust if cat is clogging
