Why service engine light is on?

The primary purpose of the Service engine light is to indicate there is a problem with the anti-pollution/ smog system.
If your vehicle is a 1996 or newer model, it comes equipped with an On-Board Diagnostics System (OBD II). This system is designed to catch emissions problems.
OBD alerts you to conditions that waste fuel, shorten engine life and result in potentially expensive repairs.
OBD lets you know your vehicle is contributing to unhealthful air by emitting excess pollutants.
The OBD trouble codes can help in diagnosing the condition, but do not always point to the cause.

How do I clear the codes for my1991 Oldsmobile 88 royal. I had to change the etc 41 sensor & the mass air sensor. Now I need to clear them and don't know how

disconnecting the battery for a couple minutes should do it on pre OBD cars that came about in '96. I've learned odd tricks such as turning the key three times or othters involving the trippometer to pull codes from various late model or post '96 OBD cars but know of no procedure for your '91

I have a 2011 nissan altima and I have tried my mechanic for a diagnostic as well as auto zone as my SES light keeps coming on. They hooked it up to both of their machines and it will not connect, it's...

Could you tell whether the scanners would get power from the OBD port at all? It could make a difference if no power at all or power but no connect. Earlier Altimas had a procedure where you could retrieve codes while bypassing the OBD port by manipulating the pedals but I am not sure if that functionality remains with newer cars. If you can add any new findings via comment on the original question, I will try and follow along.

I get the code P0361 on a 95 Buick Regal 3.8

Ignition Coil K Primary/Secondary Circuit Malfunction

ALL P0xxx codes are universal for ALL OBDII - equipped cars
(every car sold in America since '96 model year; and a few mfr's prior to that).

If your '95 is OBD-II, that's the code.
BUT, yours *might* be the same goofy "OBD-I.5" that GM put into '94 & '95 GA's; those sockets aren't OBD-II compliant, and God may not even know those old codes.

BTW, codes with P1xxx are manufacturer-specific.

The P0xxx codes can be found at:

Good Luck

I am not able to get a reading from the OBD system. There is nothing wrong with the vehicle. Is there a fuse or some other way to get the OBD system to respond.

Yes there is a fuse for the obd system it is a 15 amp fuse that is connected to the cigarette lighter. I know this sounds wierd but that is the fuse. If you check in the underhood fuse block that is where it is generally located on all makes and models.

D.I.Y OBD download terminals to jump to use check engine light to give codes

OBD 2 (96-2008) does not have that capability, older systems did up to the 1995 model year. You can buy a tester that does just codes on ebay for less than $40.00, live data stream testers are about double that.
