Hi there, its not a difficult job, however the implications of a mistake could result in a big bill for an engine repair, it may be worth letting the garage do it as £45 does seem a good price, hope this helps

Replace alternator belt

If this is like mine it's a pig of a job, you need a lot of time and patience, as the alternator is at the back of the engine and you have to remove all the plastic shroud that covers all your other pulleys and timing belts, you will find that it's very difficult to get the shrouds of let alone getting to them as there is no clearance you will have to remove the engine mounting under the gear box to tilt the engine even then it still difficult. I've done all my time belts ect. and would advise you to take it to a garage and let them do it yes it will cost you but well worth it, believe me it's a job and a half.
Good luck you will need it.

If you are asking this question I would strongly suggest you do not attempt this job yourself. It requires specialist tools and knowledge.

Need to replace upper and lower ball joints on a 2003 Silverado 4x4, also the grease boots are split. Can I do this myself or are you better to drop a $1000.00 at your local garage?

1000 dollars for this simple job ?' you joking or what ,parts are not that expensive but its the tools you need to change them and the time alsoi its a dirty job at the best of times ,grease boots -- now do you mean the drive shaft rubber boot or the ball joint rubber boot ,anyway the ball joints are rivited on so you cut the rivits off with a hammer and chisel then bolt the new ball joint in ,not difficult but the drive coupling boots are a bit more difficult and require circlip pliers and a lot of patience

You would have to proceed like you were going to change the belt until you could see it to inspect it. Here is a link to instructions on inspecting and replacing it.

When to replace timing belt? what's the avg. cost?

I recommend 60-90K Cost depends on the dealerships labor but usually when your doing a timing belt, radiator hoses and fan belts are removed and should be replaced while your in there. Its about 3hrs, more if other things need to be replaced while in there. So you looking at $300+ for labor only
