Hi Greg, The first thing to do is for you to check all vacuum hoses for cracked, broken or loose fitting. If all is weel in that department with the engine idling (if required with someone playing with the accelerator pedal inside the vehicle, pour water along the intake manifold and look for bubbles. If there are bubbles you will need to replace the intake manifold gasket. Make sure all the spark plugs are of the correct type and heat range. Take out each plug, disconnecting them one at a time, so as not to get the firing order mixed up and check for fouling. Also check the resistance of the plug cables and make sure they are within the specification. Do this with an oms meter and test the resistance. If required, replace the plug leads. Check the operation of the pressure relief fuel return valve by pinching the rubber hose with a pliers to stop flow back to the tank. If the idle becomes smooth, replace the unit. Have the fuel pump pressure checked in circuit with a high pressure fuel pump pressure gage. The pump should be pumping at about 3.6 to 4.5 bar. If it is lower than the minimum, replace the pump. Let me know how you get on? Regards John

SOURCE: 1988 F-250 460 engine stalls when dribing down the road

On older, carbureted engines, cold stalling (and hard starting) is most often due to an automatic choke that is sticking, misadjusted or broken. Cleaning the choke mechanism with aerosol carburetor cleaner may free up the choke allowing it to work properly again. If the choke housing as an electrical heating element, the element may not be receiving voltage when the key is on, or the element may have burned out (check resistance with an ohmmeter).

Other causes of stalling with a carburetor include an idle speed adjustment screw that is set too low (turn screw to increase idle speed rpm). The engine may stall if the idle fuel mixture screw(s) are not adjusted correctly or the idle mixture port(s) are dirty or clogged with fuel varnish deposits (clean the carburetor and readjust the idle mixture screws for smoothest idle). Stalling can also occur is there are vacuum leaks in the carburetor, under the carburetor (bad base gasket), or any vacuum hose connections to the carburetor or intake manifold

SOURCE: car repair manual for a 1997 suzuki vitara v6 2ltr petrol 24v

Haynes don't cover that engine. I've found a copy of the H25 engine manual which is similar to the H20 engine we have. If you search for SQ416 in google you'll find a copy you can buy or if you're lucky you'll find a free download somewhere like I did!! :-) It has helped me loads.

SOURCE: Suzuki Vitara V6, MAF sensor, white smoke.

i have a simialer problem but i was getting neat fuel out the exhaust as well . i removed the engine because id got a replacement then stripped the old one and as i thought it was a valve timing problem.looking at the engine from the front the cams on the left bank had jumped one tooth out of time so fuel was not being burnt and coming straight through the exhaust.strangely it didnt seem to have a big missfire and idling and smoke got worse when warm.

what country, the EFI systems vary by , country. Vits are sold all over the world.
ok ill now answer (poorly) on generics. Mr. otto cycles, invention.
  1. that is called gross misfiring and stalling.
  2. top reason never got a tuneup , nor the 60,000, mile one. ever.
  3. and 50 more causes.
  4. we do that tests. the tests are like 10 max. not 50. so beats guessing.
  5. http://www.fixkick.com/dies.html

in pure physics its a short list and shorter tuned up.
  1. lost 12vdc to EFI system. (even a loose IG-coil fusee or FI fuse)
  2. lost compression , or stuck open EGR, or melted CAT. cam belt slipped.
  3. lost spark (tuneup) time?
  4. bad fueling, too much, or tool little. or ISC stuck closed, and stalls. clogged fuel or air filter (tuneup) lots of tests here.......
the tools are cheap, got tools?
meters and gauges, called the mech, set?

What would cause the idle to drop to the point of cutting off? Would that be the throttle position sensor or what?

fuel filter is somewhat built into the pump and installed within the tank. Periodic replacement isn't necessary and I'm sure the filter itself and getting a mechanic to drop the tank will be very expensive.

what did you do with a "tune up" ? gotta go retrace your work and make sure the plug gaps are correct etc.

if a check engine light went on after your "tune up" then you need to find the trouble code with a scanner and that will help you in the direction you need to go. Free trouble code scan at my local autozone or advance auto parts or even aamco transmission shops

My Suzuki carry van cuts out when you stop and starts straight away have had it put on a diagnostic but shows nothing

no year,
no country
no engine stated, (a hard nut to crack)
we (usa forum) do not have Carry here, so.. that is a problem.
UK usage of "straight way": i see.
so this is called 1 of 2 things
engine stalls?
or engine misfires, or both.
Many engines, (ours) have this thing called EGR.
and if it sticks it stalls on ours. it closes just as you stop
so if it dont, it will stall. (we clean it and it works , if lucky)

as is never getting a tuneup and spark is (uk;dodgy)
there are 50 causes for stalls(most inside engine proper)
the classic 3 ways.
  1. bad engine bad, or cant breath or egr stuck open or cat melted.
  2. bad spark. (tune up time, mate?)
  3. EFI sensors read wrong, so fueling is bad. or fuel pressure is weak.
in all cases we use tools to find it , after the 100k meter, service tuneup is done.
tools as in meters and gauges, (spanners are a given)

Why does the engine cut out while driving?

have the computer checked for codes and data, it could be losing a reference pulse shutting down the system, either the sensor has an intermitant problem or it has become a temperature sensitive problem with the sensor or electrical connection. it could be a fuel pump problem as well which you have to have checked for pressure and volume.

My suzuki grand escudo sometimes cuts out especially when driving in sand road. what could be the problem?

so what cuts, name it>
engine or trans, is trans automatic or stick
cuts have vast implicaitons.
  1. bogs? full time.
  2. just misfires?
  3. hesitates a bit and recovers?
  4. engine stalls. but restarts or not?
  5. or the transmission slips,
  6. lost 12vdc power to the EFI fuel and spark system , see lamps go dead, just before CUT?

1994 Ford camper van intermittantly cuts out for no apparent reason?

why does the post show suzuki and ford in 1 blue box.
im clueless to that, but if a gas motor , the answer is the same ,for all.
: bad motor.?
bad spark, not ever tuned up.
bad fueling
stuck open EGR?
bad electical power to the EFI system, killing spark and injections all at once
it takes tools to find this,
cuts out , means stalls, can you safe the stall with fast right foot.?
do electric devices of any kind on car cut out , as engine stalls.
diagnosis takes hands on, and tools.

Why would a 2006 suzuki forenza cut off when you come to a stop

#1 all time reason for stalls is
stuck open EGR valve.
but there are 50 more. reasons, so.... that takes diagnosis.
that is what technicians do..
but can be broke down to 3, given 2 facts, (good EGR AND CAT NOT MELTED TO A BLOCK WALL)
1: BAD COMPRESSION. (can happen on any cylinder , hot or cold)
2: bad spark (tune up)
3: bad fueling.

1,2,3, can expand to 50 topics and tests)

Do you need to change spark plugs on 1999 mercury mountaineer i was told they never needed changing also why would it stall or die when cutting the wheels a little sharp

Yes they eventually need changed. If you never had a tune up your probably due. Plugs, wires ,cap, rotor, airfilter, and fuel filter. All these affect the performance of the engine. Looses power, and can make it stall or cut out under loads, like when you make hard turns and the power steering pump is putting a load on the engine
