Question about Cars & Trucks
Hi Greg, The first thing to do is for you to check all vacuum hoses for cracked, broken or loose fitting. If all is weel in that department with the engine idling (if required with someone playing with the accelerator pedal inside the vehicle, pour water along the intake manifold and look for bubbles. If there are bubbles you will need to replace the intake manifold gasket. Make sure all the spark plugs are of the correct type and heat range. Take out each plug, disconnecting them one at a time, so as not to get the firing order mixed up and check for fouling. Also check the resistance of the plug cables and make sure they are within the specification. Do this with an oms meter and test the resistance. If required, replace the plug leads. Check the operation of the pressure relief fuel return valve by pinching the rubber hose with a pliers to stop flow back to the tank. If the idle becomes smooth, replace the unit. Have the fuel pump pressure checked in circuit with a high pressure fuel pump pressure gage. The pump should be pumping at about 3.6 to 4.5 bar. If it is lower than the minimum, replace the pump. Let me know how you get on? Regards John

On older, carbureted engines, cold stalling (and hard starting) is most
often due to an automatic choke that is sticking, misadjusted or
broken. Cleaning the choke mechanism with aerosol carburetor cleaner
may free up the choke allowing it to work properly again. If the choke
housing as an electrical heating element, the element may not be
receiving voltage when the key is on, or the element may have burned
out (check resistance with an ohmmeter).
Other causes of stalling with a carburetor include an idle speed adjustment screw that is set too low (turn screw to increase idle speed rpm). The engine may stall if the idle fuel mixture screw(s) are not adjusted correctly or the idle mixture port(s) are dirty or clogged with fuel varnish deposits (clean the carburetor and readjust the idle mixture screws for smoothest idle). Stalling can also occur is there are vacuum leaks in the carburetor, under the carburetor (bad base gasket), or any vacuum hose connections to the carburetor or intake manifold

Haynes don't cover that engine. I've found a copy of the H25 engine manual which is similar to the H20 engine we have. If you search for SQ416 in google you'll find a copy you can buy or if you're lucky you'll find a free download somewhere like I did!! :-) It has helped me loads.

i have a simialer problem but i was getting neat fuel out the exhaust as well . i removed the engine because id got a replacement then stripped the old one and as i thought it was a valve timing problem.looking at the engine from the front the cams on the left bank had jumped one tooth out of time so fuel was not being burnt and coming straight through the exhaust.strangely it didnt seem to have a big missfire and idling and smoke got worse when warm.
