Gday mate, geoff here, sounds like you are low on transmission oil, check if the level is low, do this with the engine running in park with the handbrake on, also if the oil is not red but has been "burnt" and is brown, it will need to be changed, hope this helps, geoff.

Time for a rebuild or replace. Clutches burnt, bands worn out , torque converter whining or worse, planetary gears.

02 ford ranger transmission slips on small incline when put in park.

Check your transmission fluid level. Add if it is low. Your Ranger may at some point need a transmission rebuild. This involves pulling the transmission from beneath the truck and replacing the individual gears. Rebuilds are needed when the gear teeth (the grooved serrated edge of a gear) begin to wear. When this happens the gears cannot engage completely and the transmission will begin to slip.

Transmission not working right

Have the transmission pressure tested to see if it is OK. The shift solenoids may be weak or the valve body may be worn enough to not allow pressure to build. You might just want to rebuild the transmission.

Transmission not working when hot

well sounds pretty bad, did it start slipping before all of this and gradually get worst? anyways when this happens the cheapest diagnostic fix is pull all of the bolts on the bottom of the tranny to dran all the fluid, not sure if this tranny has a filter but pretty positive it does, pop a new filter in there you will see it when you you drop the pan, let all fluid drain and refill with the specific type of tranny fluid it calls from you can find the quanity and type from the auto store when you get the parts, substitute one of the quarts with lucas stop slip and hopefully it will bring the tranny out of it. otherwise your bands are shot and need a rebuild/tranny replacement. good luck and take care
