Hello! If you have not changed wheel/ tire size the most likely suspect is the Vehicle Speed Sensor (VSS)...See location and photo below...

Speedometer doesn't work

If the speedo does not work but the odometer does, the problem may be in the speedo head on the dash. If the odometer also does not work the problem may be the speed sensor in the transmission.

I have a 91 F150 4x4 4.9l 5sp. The speedometer seems to function properly at low speeds (0-40mph) but the faster I travel the more inaccurate it apears to be. When I'm on the fwy my speedo reads 75mph in a...

Hello, I had a similar problem, there is a race? in the transfer case that has a plastic gear molded onto it and it is worn down. The guy that worked on my transmission replaced it when my speedo was jumping around and causing the transmission to shift at the wrong times. My problem with my 1995 GMC suburban is when the speed meter is not working the Trany dos not work good to, what i can do?.

THAT SOUNDS LIKE A VARIABLE SPEED SENSOR! IT IS LOCATED ON TOP OF THE TRANSMISSION! IT WILL EITHER HAVE A SPEEDO CABLE ATTACHED TO IT, OR JUST 2 WIRES! WHEN THAT GOES OUT, IT WILL AFFECT YOUR TRANNY ALSO!

would imagine the internal speedo gears are skipping when cold. They are located in the transmission where the cable goes into. It is easily removed to inspect

Hello, does anybody know how to re-calibrate the speedo in a 1991 R2500 Suburban, rear axle has been changed to different ratio. Thanks

If it has a cable speedo, you change the plug in trans gear. They usually come in different colors.

Bmw 328i speedo problem

These cars have expesive components so I would bring it to the dealer to confirm the speed sensor located on the transmission is in fact defective or faulty before I purchased the dealer item and replaced it.

I have a 93 Chevy Suburban 1500 and the Transmission won't shift into any gear. I have an 1983 Chevy Suburban Transmission that is still good. Can I use the 83 Transmission in my 93 Suburban?

Not without a little adapting. The 1993 has a 4l60e which is electronically controlled and has shift solenoids. If the 83 is an overdrive it is a 700r4 which is the same trans but not electronic. If you put it in the speedo wont work and you will need to install a T.V. cable so the transmission will shift. The 93 won't go forward or backwards?

Speedometer

there is a clamp that either needs to be removed (10mm bolt holds it on) or on some transmisions it's an O-Ring that allows you to remove the speedo gear.

remove the speedo gear and bring it to the parts store so they can match up the identical amount of teeth so that the new one will not make your speedo run fast or slow. The gears are color coded however i have seen many instances where aftermarket ones have thier own color scheme and the convert charts are inaccurate so count the teeth
