Re: removing bell housing
Hello sir, ryobi trimmers and other models removal of the bell housing,removal of the metal bell housing,or clutch drum, on models 780R & 790R, here is what you do. after removing the trimmer & shaft assembly.remove the spark plug insert a screwdriver in the cylinder to keep piston from moveing. to remove the bell housing twist off the spring and using a T20 TORX screwdriver unscrew the retaining screw in the center of the bell housing (normal r/h thread) . push down firmely try not to strip screw head . you should be able to remove clutch housing.remove clutch using a pair of channel locks,works for me, (normal r/h thread) you should be able to remove front engine cover to repair what you need to.coil,pull stsrt, hope this works,. this solution applies to all trimmers with clutch removal~~~hope this helps,,any comments welcome,thank you. ``

If it is the front seal in the gear box then the box has to come out. The seal is in the extension housing that the clutch throw out bearing runs on and the seal can be replaced by removing that housing . However mostly if that seal leaks then the front bearing on the clutch shaft may be failing allowing the shaft to move and that is why the seal leaks. If the front of the box is dry then the oil leak may be the rear main seal of the engine so it is best to check both arrears as the oil leaks from the same point in the bell housing
Gday mate,geoff here, there are 3 things that can leak there, 1st is coolant as there should be a freeze plug at the back of each cylinder bank in there. 2nd engine oil as there is a seal on the crankshaft and a plug at the back of the Cam tunnel, mostly if its engine oil it will be the crank seal. 3rd is gear/transmission oil, front seal on the gearbox if that is the case, also make sure that the oil isn't coming from the top and leaking down to look like its the bell housing leaking, as the valley cover and rocker covers extend back to just above the bell housing, hope this helps, geoff.
You should be able to tell if the bellhousing is a seperate part from the housing by looking at the case(look for a "seam"at the bellhousing to the case,if there is a joint,the bellhousing can be replaced my pulling the trans)(you didn't state auto or manual-some auto transmisssions have a seperate bellhouse,every manual trans I've ever seen has a seperate bellhouse)
Hi Craig, I'd suggest that the oil seal which seals between the torque converter neck and the gear box casing is damaged and will need replacing. The job seems simple but in fact can result in breaking the gearbox oil pump, when the torque converter is refitted to the gear box. the neck has to align with the gears inside the gear box and the oil pump, if the torque converter is not fitted correctly the damage I've mentioned will take place when refitting box. If you have never done this before,it may be best to take the truck to a shop or have some one with experience help you. You will need the truck up far enough to take out the transmission. The linkage and drive shaft has to be removed,then unbolt the transmission from the bell housing.Special tools may be needed to pull and replace the seal. Transmission fluid needs to be changed since it is a brownish color.
If transmission fluid is dripping off the bellhousing your torque converter seal is leaking or your transmission pump seal is leaking. Chances are the torque converter seal is leaking since the torque converter is spinning on it any time the engine is turning, the pump seal dosen't move it just keeps fluid inside the transmission. Even though it leaks with or without the engine running I'm willing to bet if you got underneath it with the engine running you will see it leaks more with the engine running. Now if either seal is leaking it will require the engine to be removed from the transmission to get to the seal. Sorry but this isn't going to be a cheap quick fix.
