In order to help you with this will require you buy or have access to a OBD2 electronic engine control live data scan tool, you can find them on eBay for about $100.00, you will also need to buy or have access to a special fuel pressure test gauge, the test port to hook this up is on the top of the engine in the fuel delivery pipe that sits over the fuel injectors, it looks like an oversize tire fill valve. You will also need a factory manual to know what you are looking at as far as data from the scanner goes, That can be found used here: http://www.faxonautoliterature.com/1999-... Here is a link to a scanner you need:http://www.ebay.com/itm/Ford-Trucks-SUVs...

Have you checked the fuel pressure? As a note modern Catalytic Converters seldom if ever fail, the older "Bead" type do, these new ones are a monolithic ceramic brick grid and are VERY durable, so whomever gave this information to you was wrong.. You also need to check the electronic engine control systems computer for fault codes.

SOURCE: On my 1999 pontiac grand

A clogged catalytic converter can cause serious engine performance issue from cylinders misfiring due to the computer trying to compensate for the air/fuel ratio and if they become totally restricted they will blow up. a grand am I had worked on had a baseball sized hole in the side of the converter and the ceramic catalyst substrate inside looked like burnt coal from a bbq grill. With the vehicle running place your hand lightly over the exhaust when you just start the vehicle and it's not hot the exhaust flow should blow your hand away if it doesn't seem to have much force against your hand odds are the exhaust is restricted as your mechanic noted

SOURCE: can i drain the torque

I don't know of any way to drain a torque converter without removing it. It is possible to REPLACE the fluid by using a flush machine - but not to drain it...assuming you don't want to create drastic and irreparable damage to the transmission bell house and the torque converter itself.

Could be transmission. Or a plugged catalytic converter, or the rear differential. Does it get worse when warmed up? Is there grinding/unusual noises? Where does the sound come from? Try starting out with the transmission in first and manually shift up the gears as you drive. Does it seem to slip? I assume its an automatic. Depending on your level of experience, they can be complicated to replace yourself.

Please help! 96 grand am misfire...

Sounds like the catalytic converter plugged. Don't continue to drive car till something gets done with this as you can damage the engine by the excessive heat. Do something but remember it is illegal to take these converters off and not replace them, so be careful what you decide to do. good luck with it.

It sounds like your describing your torque converter and that its staying unlocked. you might want to check your brake light switch/s if they are malfunctioning it could cause your problem. Also possible that your fuel filter and/or CAT might be clogged.
