Question about 1987 Nissan Maxima
The A/C idler pulley flew off my '87 Maxima at speed (parts strewn alongside road). The shaft from the engine is still there, but nothing else. The belt it tensions also drives the water pump, so the car is unusable. I ordered the idler pulley repacement assembly (P/N 11925-16E01), but it came with no installation instructions. My factory repair manual also does not cover this repair (not the first repair not covered by the factory manual, by way). Can someone tell me how to install this assembly (note, it is the entire assembly, not just the bearing)?

SOURCE: Replace idler arm pulley
An idler arm is a steering component found on vehicles without rack and pinion steering. Your referring to an idler pulley. To replace: remove the belt, remove the bolt from the center of the pulley, replace the pulley and reinstall the belt.

typically you need a fork style tool to release the press fit of the joint. You unbolt it and use man against beast with hammer method and it wil come apart.

belt dressing / new belt / but the grinding means the idler puller is going to grenade soon and you wont have any belt on it so go buy a new idler and change it right away or you risk the engine overheating by not turning the water pump .if it's grinding greasing the old one wont do much help .damage is already done in the bearing .and there sealed bearings . you just throw away the old 1.

After adjustment is satisfactory, tighten the idler pulley bolt, and then tighten the adjustment bolt.
Reconnect the negative battery cable.
When replacing more than 1 belt, it is a good idea to make note or mark what belt goes around what pulley; this will make installation easier if you mix up the belts.
