Just bought the car less than a week ago, so it is used but has less then 20k miles. Problem is that the sunroof closes mostly all the way and then reverses itself back to half open. from there everything else functions but if you try to close it again it just does the same thing. Not to familiar with how they are supposed to look but I did check out the tracks and everything seemed ok. anyone got any advice.
To whoever said wd-40 works thank you so much you a life saver my car is parked outside and it works so much better now!
I found the web reference below at a different fix-it site ... for your exact year & model Kia
So if the phonebook method does not work you might try this:
"It's reopening because of obstacle detection. When sunroof motor current draw goes high the module will reverse the motor because it thinks it has hit something.
The issue may be calibration, the motor, a damaged guide, foreign debris preventing proper movement, or it could be the module itself. Depending on what the issue is you may or may not be able to get it closed until the problem is repaired.
First disconnect the battery to clear the module's memory. Once the battery is reconnected turn the key on, press and hold the sunroof open button. Continue holding the button for ten seconds after it is full open.
Then press and hold the close button and see if it will go full closed. If it does close continue to hold the button again for ten seconds.
If this doesn't work then the problem is going to need to be repaired for it to close."
Helpful?
Good luck on your troubleshooting
SOURCE: Sunroof won't close
clean the runners on the sunroof watching out for trapped debris. try lubricating the runners with a fine lubricant with a clothe, make sure no debris caught in motor also.
SOURCE: My sunroof has opened and now it won't close. Any clues?
hi sounds like a faulty sunroof relay keeping the motor running it may well have blown the fuse or burned the motor out if you connected it back up and it doesn,t work at all but should be able to turn the sunroof back manually look on the sunroof motor there should be sometthing like a slot for a large screwdriver or a bolt head of sorts just wind it back and then check the relays and fuses if your switch is a electronic one make a make shift one and try [simple switch]on and off as this is delicate circiutery and the slightest short can destroy it best of luck yates210456

When you press the button do you hear any noise coming from the sunroof? If not and you say you check the fuses then more the likely the motor burned out and you will have to replace it. But if you hear noise coming from the sunroof it may be that the sunroof came off track or is simply jammed for some reason.

to find out if it is off its track you can remove the cover between the rearview and the sunroof that is the motor/drive assembly. there is a slotted pin in this assemply that you turn with a screwdriver to move the sunroof manually if it wont move manually then you have a bigger issue. sometimes thie drive assembly screws get loose, i believe there are two screws that hold it up,when those are loose you will get a grinding sound when the gears skip. good luck.

make it go back to the open position, look down the side of the tracks in the roof that the sun shade slides in and you will probable find the guides for the sunshade are jamming up the tracks. only way to replace them<4 one in each corner> is to remove the glass section and then close sunshade that will give access to the 4 guides which are available from dealer as a kit

Its out of time. Place a phonebook thick book so as to block glass from closing. Manually close moon roof to book, stop, open, remove book and should close all the way. That's it!
I had the same problem I sprayed WD40 works like new close with no problem
