Question about 1990 Toyota 4Runner

1 Answer

When I am traveling about 45mph I notice gear oil on my rear window.

I typically dont have this issue when I am going at a lower speed. The faster I travel the more gear oil that ends up on my back window. I am thinking that this is just a gasket that needs to be replaced on the pumpkin. Has anyone else had this problem, and if so how was it resolved?

Gday mate, geoff here, well gear oil up the tail gate would probably be a leak in the rear Dif, try looking under to find the trail of oil to its source, then post agian if you need, could be overfull & coming out of dif, there is also a hose that goes up into the bodywork from the dif , this is the breather, its hosed up high so that when you go into lets say cold water the dif doesnt **** water in when cooling from the water, hope this starts the process, correctly, geoff.,

2001 Toyota Camry. Loud rumble on start/warm-up, slightly decreasing after some drive time. Engine seems strained (with louder rumble and vibration) mostly in lower gears, accelerating and/or uphill. No...

Have you checked your oil and fluid levels in the engine and transmisson.
if it's a manual could the clutch be worn out causing the high rpm and thrust bearing noise in the clutch.

My gears are P- park R- reverse D- drive (2 Drives one with a box or circle around it) what is each D for

  • D with no circle is just "Drive." this a lower geared drive and best used around time as it provides a better pick up and over all response.
  • OD is "Over Drive" and used for cruising speeds ove 50+ MPH down the highway. Over Drive allows the vehicle to cruise at a more sustained speed with less engine speed and provides better fuel consumption.
  • While you are in Drive going down the highway and your speed reaches 50 MPH just switch gears into Over Drive and you will notice your car "relax" a bit. Remember you don't want to switch from Over Drive to Drive until you get down to around 45MPH or it can be a little rough on your engine and transmission.

  • Hope this helps and thank you for using FixYa.

I have a honda passport 2000 rear wheel drive,do i have a rearend or is its call a differential?

I think I know what you are asking; This is called a rear wheel drive vehicle and uses a differential which IS the axle or "rear end" (because it is in the rear end of the vehicle). What a differential is is simply a set of gears that obviously drive the rear wheels but, when you turn a corner the wheel speed changes. One will be going faster than the other depending on which way you turn. This gear set by design, allows the different speeds to not be noticed by the driver and not wear down tyres or break components. Pretty cool huh?! If you are having any issues or need further info, please let me know.

Can I engage and disengage the 4 wheel drive while I'm driving? At what speed?

You can engage from two wheel drive to four wheel drive at any reasonable speed though I find it's easier on the transfer case if you do that below 45mph. Lift you foot off the gas as you shift so the unit is not under stress. To engage 4 low, you should not be traveling faster than 5mph and then, only on slippery surfaces. When in that gear, it is not advisable to travel much faster than 25-30mph and never on dry ground.

Rear on a2004 astro van awd v-6 locks up when making turn's left or right.but does'nt do it when gowing forward or reverse.

Rear end is a lockup dif. This couples both wheels. It has clutches that allow inner and outer weels to turn at different speeds when going around corner, thus eliminating most tire scrub. If noise is coming from dif. change dif oil and redress clutches.Driving in a straight line with a lockup dif. would not normally be noticed, because both rear wheels are travelling at the same speed.

My 2002 trailblazer is making a noise when I go over 45 mph and appears to not be going in gear quickly at that speed

Check your transmission fluid level and/or have the fluid changed. If problem persist have a transmission professional at a dealership or transmission shop service it.

Can i use transmisson from other type in my c2500 1983 chevy

your cheapest bet is to go with a different gear ratio in the rear diff(the lower the ratio the higher speed and less rpm) but if your truck has a 3 speed automatic you can put a 4 speed with overdrive (700r4 would be the best)
is your truck 2wd or 4wd?
hope this helps!
