Question about 1994 Dodge Intrepid

1 Answer

Shifting problems the car does not want to shift it sometimes shifts easily until it gets to third then won't go int overdrive other times it won't stay in first or second wants to go back to neutral when it trys to shift to overdrive it drops down a gear then skips drive and slides into overdrive it jumps studders down the road. sometimes if you stop and shut it off then restart it will shift. i was told it was the shift moduale but cannot find out where that is. the rpms are going crazy and i am afraid that i am going to blow my engine it revs up to 5200 trying to get into the next gear. it seems like it does not know what gear it is suppose to be in. HELP!

Never seen a dodge and autos a bit thin on the ground here in spain but i think the control you are looking for is on the side of the gearbox ,and if its like VW then its not cheap ,i repaired one by removing the offending item and drilling the rivits out then cleaning with acetone the paths on one side and rubbing a soft lead pencil on the brushes refitting a couple of nuts and bolts with instant gasket in the join and this car is still driving around a year later.

It wont shift into overdrive the transmission has pressure I changed to fluids when I go to pass it wont shift into overdrive

strange as it may sound, transmissions do not shift into overdrive to pass
they down shift a ratio to get extra torque from the motor and will stay down shifted until the vacuum actuator shifts it back and only then when the VSS reports to the TCM that a ratio change up is needed will the overdrive click in
If you cannot get OD under any circumstances run the fault codes and check for a problem overdrive servo/ solenoid , TCM unit

95' Mercury Sable 3.0w/overdrive auto trans when car reaches operating temp trans will shift fine until it shifts for third or o/d then completely disengages will not reengage until car slows and down...

Sounds like a shift solenoid problem. If you have any codes associated with solenoid failure, that is probably what it is. If there are no codes, it is probably something stuck in the valve body or something else mechanical.

My 1980 mgb overdrive shifts fine cold when it reaches operating temp.it won't shift up or down.

Solenoid coil warms up and dissipates too much voltage with age and needs replacing. Bottom of overdrive unit. Sometimes cleaning and adjusting can help extend their life a bit.

My ford F150 won't shift from 2nd to 3rd. Does anyone know what could be the issue?

Usually the transmission needs to be rebuilt in that situation. It's a very common problem if that's the famous automatic overdrive transmsission. AOD I have had three trucks that have done that. It usually starts by shuttering when it shifts and than finally goes out. Sometimes the Lucas transmission treatment gives you a little more time, but it sounds too late for yours. From what I understand (mechanic told me) that when the overdrive goes out, it takes third gear with it. If you drive in hilly areas, that overdrive is shifting in and out all the time as you go up and down hills and wears it out. My Dad had that hapen on his F150 and he replaced his transmission with a junk yard transmission that turned out to have the same problem. I had that transmission replaced with a Jasper rebuilt and it worked great. I think it was $1300 for the rebuilt trans with the old one core trade in. I think when 3rd gear goes out, you can only go about 45mph without over reving the engine. I saw that same problem with a Ford Crown vic with that same transmission and 302 engine that my neighbor had.
Did your third gear just go out all of a sudden or were you getting like a shuttering or kind of a grinding sound when it shifted?

MY TRANS WONT SHIFT INTO THIRD GEAR UNTIL IM DOING 45 MPH IT SHIFTS FINE IN FIRST AND SECOND GEAR WHEN IT IS IN SECOND GEAR AND WONT SHIFT TO THIRD I CAN PUT IT IN N AND BACK TO OVERDRIVE THEN IT SHIFTS.

Most likely your shift cable (from the selector to the transmission) is worn, maybe needs lubrication. Mine had a similiar problem, but had to shift it into neutral and back up to get it in reverse. A new shift cable solved the problem.

You need an impulse sender that is located in the distributor. It is easier to get a used one from a wrecking yard and install the whole distributor. Am I right in assuming your rpm gauge is fluctuating up and down rapidly?
On your transmission problem, you can try cleaning the overdrive solenoid located on the back of the bell housing near the main linkage. Sometimes that helps with the delayed shifting problems.
