Volks jetta deisel 1997 won't start

I have a volks jetta deisel 1997 which needs to be plugged in in cold weather in order to start. Is this normal? I can't go anywhere with it if I don't have access to a plug. What can I do?

You need to change the glow plugs in a diesel just like changing spark plugs in a gas. they burn out and don't heat so well, change the glow plugs and it will fire up in -30 with no block heater. you should run diesel fuel conditioner with anti jel. this keeps the diesel from jelling and not getting into the engine.

The plug is attached to a block heater that warms the antifreeze when the car is sitting. I own a 2004 Jetta Diesel that has done fine all the way down to -10F without plugging it in, just make sure to always cycle the glow plugs before you crank the engine when you first start it, that's the most important step when starting a diesel. Your car probably gets around 50 MPG and diesel fuel doesn't burn as hot as gasoline, so starting and keeping the car at it's full operating temperature on a cold winter day can be almost impossible.

To add Antifreeze into the coolant system, you add the fluid into the overflow resevoir. The radiator on VW's does not have a rad cap and they use the overflow. Hope this helps.

Why is glow plug light flashing after boosting in very cold weather?

hi.
in very cold weather, the glow plugs may stay on for up to a minute after starting the car to assist until the engine starts to warm up. the light flashes to tell you that the plugs are still on.
the time the light stays on can vary due to the temperarure.

Hard cold start 1997 Jetta gas

can't say for sure but almost all engines that have come to me needing ether to cold start have poor compression. test the compression first.
you sould never need to use ether on a gas engine and very carefully on a diesel when very cold.

It hesitate to start up in cold weather i have to give a pump of

There is a cold start valve srpay extra fuel at the start to assist the start in the cold weather. If it is not open during the start then this is why there is a problem. This valve is operated by an electric coil. Even checking the resistance reading, but the valve is still not opening due to being stuck. Power is only coming to the valve during the start and the temperature is cold reported by the coolant temperature sensor . If the coolant temperature sensor is bad reporting warm temperature then the valve will not open. The temp sensor is less expensive than the valve, so it is an economical way to tackle the sensor first. Good luck.
