Vcs light and traction of light on

Mechanic has reset the codes(lasted a few days) and added new gas cap..lights came back on the next day. Mechanic said reading was for an evaporator emission small leak detected. They say they have checked all hoses that might be involved.

how long has it been since the light came on the first time or when did your problem begin?

  • jerry Feb 09, 2012

The first time the lights came back on was about 4 days after the reset. The lights came on about about 3 weeks ago.

sometimes an intermediate problem can trigger the computer to show a fault even if it is no longer present. it should store the code for 10 starts and turn it off on its own unless the problem is still there.i have seen alot of this same problem in the past few weeks . seems to possibly be a leaking hose in a bend, could be a bad seal somewhere or the evap can could have water in it which froze at some point.

checking on your light problem. have you got any new info since we spoke last?

  • jerry Feb 20, 2012

I would like to thank everyone for their input. It turned out to be the fuel cap. It was the first thing my mechanic changed, I never looked at it or put fuel in my vehicle after he installed the cap and as it turns out he or rather his employee( I hope) ordered the wrong cap. Needless to say I have lost a little faith in him. This is the first goof with him so I guess I will cut him some slack. I should have checked it myself so I get to blame me to. Thanks again folk's.

There is a valve up by the air box. Check to make sure that hose is is connected and that the fitting on the valve is not cracked. It is very common for one of the two tow happen since it interferes with the checking or replacement of the air filter.

I have a 2005 Nissan Altima 2.5 S 4 cylinder - went to get gas (just a bit, did not fill up) on Christmas and soon afterward the 'service engine soon' light came on. Called the Nissan dealer

When last did you service the vehicle ?
did they use the proper fuel ?

Chances are the service time is near where you will need to do a basic service, Plug , plug wires, filters etc. And reset the counter.
the fuel ting is just a coincidence.

My gas cap wasn't put on properly after my last fill. The check engine light came on, so of course I put the gas cap back on correctly but now the Check Engine Light is staying on. I only drive it in...

It may go out on its own, the next time the computer does a routine system check. If two or three runs around town over the next few days doesn't clear it, only a dealer or a good mechanic with the proper scanner can turn it off.

Check engine light came on. Code P1456.

Did you change the gas cap with a Honda gas cap? Tighten it at least three clicks?
Also, Honda recommends that you never top off the tank when getting gas (only go to the click-off of the pump; otherwise you can get back flow into the system that will cause the code).
Tightening or replacing the cap will not immediately cause the light to go off; it can take up to three days of driving for the light to reset.
To check if your readiness codes (emission system) are set, turn the ignition to ON (II), without starting the engine. The Malfunction Indicator Lamp will come on for 20 seconds. If it then goes off, the readiness codes are set. If it blinks 5 times, the readiness codes are not set.
You can, of course, try resetting your engine light to see if it will come back on (which it probably will). I believe the procedure is:
Turn off the engine.
Press and hold the Select/Reset knob (odometer) in the instrument panel, then turn the ignition switch to ON (II).
Hold the knob for approximately ten seconds until the indicator resets.

Hope this helps you.

Check Engine Light won't go off

If you have an Advance Auto Parts store where ever you are, they will read the code and tell you exactly what to code is and what it means. Any mechanic who "guesses" isn't a mechanic at all - he's a thief. Emissions leak can be any number of things, but not the gas cap!

Check engine light came on this morning, mazda 3 09', it has 14,500 miles, i just got an oil change at the dealership a few days ago, also i think the gas cap was a little bit loose i noticed the last time...

I would take it back to the dealer and tell them the check engine light came on not long after oil change. Have them run the code on their dime...it's a reasonable request!

A loose gas cap will defintely trigger the engine light, but in most cases, it will reset itself within one week. Some cars don't have a reset which forces you to have a mechanic reset it for you.
