That year Aerostar only came with rear abs. It uses a single sensor located on the top of the rear differential. Check that sensor for resistance and the connector for corrosion. If it checks out good make sure the wiring to the sensor is in tact. If that all checks out more than likely it's the RABS valve under the vehicle on the drivers side. I'm not even sure you can get that part anymore or would want to even fix it. Let me know if you have any questions and I'll do my best to answer them. Thank you for using FixYa.com!

Now that i think about it the RABS valve is under the hood on the drivers side under the brake booster I think mounted to the frame rail. It's been about 10 years since I had to deal with one.

Check the sensors on each wheel of the brakes ,their is a sensor on each wheel so check the wires to these sensors are not broke or corroded first then report back as star trek is on soon, then i will explaiun how to test them forget the code reader as the ABS will reset itself as soon as it reads a signal from all four wheels its the only onboard computer that does

See iam lost here i wouldnt have known that but i only work on europeon vehicles and never seen this where ABS is only on back brakes ,seen load sensors on back brakes in the hydraulic line but never a ABS sensor on a diff unit before ,seen a diff lock sensor though but this is just out of my league.

Than why would you leave a solution for something you are not familiar with?

  • Colin Stickland
    Colin Stickland Feb 10, 2012

simple because its got four wheels and a engine as such 90% of the time i can diagnose a problem which does help most people although i may not have a clue as to what that model of vehicle looks like .

I understand where you are coming from, but in this case the poor guy would have gone through the work of pulling all the wheels looking for ABS sensors that aren't there. Then he would have been scratching his head wondering how an ABS light could be on when he doesn't have any ABS sensors.

I am not a European expert and I generally don't answer those questions unless I have personal experience with the issue.

How do you reset the abs light.

you must have skipped a step>? did you follow all steps in the FSM
or all steps at ALLDATA.com under brakes?
ABS auto resets each key on.
if and ABS scan shows rear brake failure it is.
if it is, then they are in fact bad (slipping)
the ABS detects tire /road slip, then modulates the brakes as you stop
if the ABS sees, the rear brakes fail, during braking then the brakes
are in fact bad, it will not lie to you,
but if you left a sensor off or broke it, the scan tool would show that.
id try to find a scan tool for you ABS and use it.

Does ABS work properly? Get on dirt road and try to lock brakes (do this carefully insuring no police car tailgating, lol) Could be bad wheel speed sensor. Check codes with scan tool capable of reading ABS and trans codes.

The ABS light being on means that there is a problem with the ABS, but not the basic braking system. The "shaking" in the pedal you felt is probably a warped rotor. This common on Ford vehicles.
An ABS failure usually is related to the wheel sensors being defective or dirt buildup.
