Find the brake light switch up under the drivers side of the dash. It will be mounted on a bracket near the brake pedal lever. Make sure one wire has power to it all the time. Make sure one of the other wires has power when the brake pedal is depressed. If no wires have power when depressed the switch is bad. If the wires have power than you probably have a bad turn signal switch. I can probably get you specific wire colors if you need them. Let me know if you have any questions and I'll do my best to answer them. Thank you for using FixYa.com!

I just purchased a 1996 cavalier. It didn't have an owners manual and i need to know what the abrieviations on the fuse box stand for. I'm trying to find the fuse for the brake lights and rear turn...

Hi, the likely problem is the turn signal switch. The signals and brake lights use different fuses. You can get an owners manual here:
http://www.extendedgmwarranty.com/owners-manual/chevrolet/1996-Chevrolet-Cavalier.pdf

A new switch is about $40, and it isn't too hard to replace. Make sure you get one that has the same controls as yours does. To replace the switch, remove the covers from the steering column, disconnect the switch and unscrew it from the column.

Please let me know if you have questions, and thanks for using FixYa.

I installed a new brake light switch on a 1999 Chevy Cavalier. Changed the bulbs, and checked the fuses. My brake lights still dont work.

You might need to adjust the switch so that when the brake pedal is fully off, the brake switch is disengaged. You should be able to adjust it by screwing it either in or out. Make sure you have connected the wires and that they are fully seated.
If it still doesn't work chances are it is faulty.

The brake lights won't go out. I pulled the fuse so the battery doesn't go dead, but can't figure out why they are staying lit.

on your brake pedal there is a switch that controls your brake lights over time it comes to lose just enough for the switch won't come in contact with the pedal

1998 Chevy Cavalier Z24 left rear brake/turn lamps will not work

Sometimes even a new bulb will not work. If you have a Digital Multi Meter you can check that you have power going to the rear. I know that sometimes when a vehicle loses a bulb in one end that it can make the other end stop working. With that said, I suggest that you double check to see that the front works. I used to own a 98 Cavalier RS with the 2.2 liter motor and I know that there are fuses under the hood and behind a little door on the drivers side in the car. Might check fuses under the hood also.
