Had the same issue. I replaced one of the fuses in the little case on top of the engine. Check the fuse diagram in the manual, locate the one for a/c. The fuses are color coded by amps, just buy the right color and push into place. (I did this after verifying my coolant levels were normal)

You need to check the engine all over when the engine over heats it very hard on it and could melt wiring and plastic parts after you check that look at the relays if the fan is out one of the relays may be out and you would need to replace it

MY 99 VW HAS A PROBLEM WITH THE AIR. IT RUNS AND COOL GOOD UNTIL ABOUT 15 MILES AND THE AIR CONDITIONER STARTS SCREECHING. I TURN IT OFF AND AFTER A WHILE IT WORKS FINE AGAIN BUT ONLY FOR A WHILE THEN BACK...

Sounds like your blower fan motor is getting bad bearings. They are usually just an oil soaked bronze which will start to "gall" after the oil dries up. Dusty conditions also have an adverse effect. Find the blower motor and remove it (usually 3 or 4 screws) and spray the motor shaft where it exits the to the fan with a product called "tri-flon" . it will stink for a while, but will solve the problem.

On my 1998 vw beetle the cooling fans are not running, I have changed the coolant temperature switch, the fan module switch, and the sensor on the radiator. Would the thermostat keep them from coming on?

The cooling fans work with a sensor. It has to reach a certain temperature in order for it to work. Maybe it is not the fan. Fan not coming is definitely caused by a faulty thermostat.

He can if it's nothing more than a broken cable, otherwise it gets real difficult. Even getting to the ends of the cable behind the dash could be a frustrating experience.
