The firing order as you described means that your first plug wire on the cap goes to Number one then the second to number 8 then third to number 4 and so on. The numbers on the cap do not correspond to the plugs, they are simply marked for positions. Starting at #1 follow around clocwise to the plugs marked on the firing order
