you have to drill into the cylinder housing to get a lock pin out. and thats after you safely remove the airbag. hell of a job. instead of going thru all of that, underneath the steering wheel there is a button. you may have to use a flat head screw driver and slide it thru the slot in the cover panel on the underside of the steering column to engage the button. once the button is engaged, you will be able to turn the key back to shut the car off.

I recently replaced the multi-function switch on my '95 Olds Achieva because the high beams did not engage. Problem solved. But now, it won't start. I was able to start it initially to take it in for the...

Check the ignition switch connector. Check for 12v on the start circuit with the ignition in the start position. Check neutral safety switch connector. Check for 12v in and out of the N/S switch when the gear selector is in neutral or park and the ignition is in the start position. If you have 12v there check at the small terminal on the starter solenoid. If you find 12v there and on the big terminal there would appear to be a starter problem.

Where is a good place to get step by step instructions on how to replace an ignition switch in an 97 oldsmobile achieva, with photos and is free.............

The service manual. But you could search the Oldsmobile, Cadillac, and Bonneville forums for info.
I did a 1997 Malibu and after removing the appropriate dash covers, you had to pull the instrument panel, which just pops out. Then you got to the switch through the opening.

1997 olds achieva...replaced the ignition switch now it starts but immediately shuts down. I can repeat this by turning the key off and re-cranking. just won't keep running??

Could be any of the following:
New switch it is defective
You did not get all the wires back on
A wire broke while you were changing out the switch
Bad fuse
Loose connecting in the circuitry (hardest one to solve)

The car fires but stops immediately

I had a problem with a 97 Achieva recently.Someone else replaced the PCM/ignition switch and passlock sensor.I replaced the ICP.Engine would turn over but wouldn't start and the security lamp was dim and flashing and then it would go solid.I tried the wait 10 minutes thing but,the light would never go off! I put the original passlock sensor back onto the lock cylinder. But this is what fixed the problem.I cleaned the contacts on the black wires and green on the ignition switch with tv tuner cleaner! After I cleaned those contacts the security light was flashing brightly. So I turned the key to run and left it there. After a few minutes it stayed on solid.I waited about 10 minutes but the light never went out.So I turned off the switch and then tried starting. It started right up and the security lamp flashed and then went off.Has started every time since.Note:I also scraped the pins that I cleaned with the cleaner with a knife.

95 olds achieva starter not engaging

The click you hear is the starter relay. Check for continuity thru relay with battery negative cable disconnected and switch in start position. If no continuity, it probably has burned contacts. Sometimes these can be taken apart and contacts filed/sanded cleaned.
