Question about 1999 Volkswagen Passat

Hi , I have a 99 passat 2.8 v6 5 speed , car runs good but my check engine light is on I had it ran and my code that popped up was p 0102 which is mass air flow or massive vacuum leak. I checked for a leak and nothing so I replaced my maf and my check engine light is still on and I have driven it 400 miles so far since I have replaced it . Does anyone know how to reset it so I can get it to pass inspection ??

    Have the same year Passat -- also have a Actron CBD II PocketScan, that gives me the Code numbers and what the code means. But once you get the code you have to erase it before the "ckeck engine light" will go off. The light won't just go out cause you have fixed the problem.

Vacuum leak somewhere.
Possibly could be the O2 sensor (the one before the cat up front).
I'd search for a vacuum leak since you may have rattled something loose.

SOURCE: Check engine light flashes sometimes and runs rough

A flashing check engine light is a critical indicator. That usually means that something went wrong that will damage the emission control system... and that is usually an ignition issue. First off, the OEM plug your car calls for is an NGK irridium... NOT BOSCH and not anything with more than 1 prong. Those NGKs are like 2 bucks and they are the proper plug. Make sure you have these plugs and make sure they are gapped to .028. Next, my suggestion is put all the new stuff on again. Drive it to autozone and have them delete all the codes. Drive it around until the check engine light comes on again, then immediately go back and read the codes. The ECU is smart enough to know which cylinder is misfiring. On these cars, I think they have three banks of two... meaning one "coil" inside the coil pack operates two of the cylinders. So if you get multiple misfires, it's the coil. If you get one misfire it's probably an individual plug wire or plug. Good luck.

Not sure that the O2 sensor was bad. It sounds like it was telling you that side of the exhaust system was picking up a lean mixure at the O2 sensor. The O2 sensor was doing its job by telling you the mixture changed. If the O2 sensor was bad, it would say low voltage range for that sensor, or open curcuit.
Now the car has had time to do its diagnostic sweep, it is telling you the same thing, but from a different sensor...the fuel mix is too lean. Air/spark/and fuel is what you need in the correct amounts. In your car, the ECM engine control module controls this by taking readings from all the sensors several hundred times a second.
Mechanically, you have a few options. Change the fuel filter...under the car on the passenger side. It is an easy job.
Change the fuel pressure regulator. This keeps the fuel at 4 BAR so the fuel injectors can do their job correctly. This job just needs a screw driver to pop off the clip that holds it in place. No hoses need to be removed. It is on top of the intake manifold, in-line with a metal fuel line and a rubber one.
The fuel injectors could be clogged up on one side of the engine. Run some fuel injector cleaner through a tank of gas. Also, listen for a constant ticking sound at each injector. If one sounds off PAR, then replace it.
The fuel pump may not be giving you enough power. However, the readings seem to be localized to one side, so I doubt it.
Start with the easiest thing, and see if it works. Also, you will need to get yourself a VAG scan tool. It is the only one with codes in it for all of your VW systems, not just engine codes like the ODB scanners. You can get a nice one for $50 on-line.

first you need to get the code if the check engine light is on then there will be a code,you can go to Autozone or Advance auto parts they will do this for free,then bring it to us and we can help you better. i have a hunch it might be your engine speed sensor .

Have a 97 VW Passat VR6, it died one day as the check engine light came on, it would run for a few minutes and then die, running shorter each time. Took it in to the shop and got the fuel pump replaced,...


You need to check fuel pressure at the fuel rail.if pressure is at spec. Check spark at the plugs. Also replace relay for fuel pump if it isn't working. Could be a bad new fuel pump. Pull the codes first.

Sorry but you need a diagnostic equipment.The cheapest way is to use code reader with option to delete faults codes.Good luck

There may be no check engine light but that doesn't mean there isn't a code in the ECU. Especially with a misfire. I'd have the codes scanned and see what you got. The cannister issue isn't going to give you a misfire it will give you stalling and rough idle.
Lets see what ECU is saying. You can go to Autozone if you don't have a scanner they will scan it for free. If scanning turns out negative than have a cylinder leakage test done. This way we can determine which cylinder has the problem and what the problem is.

2000 passat v6; check engine light+spuddering when accelerating


good chance with that problem you were close most likely a misfire will cause that. it would be either your spark plugs or coil pack. also make sure your vacuum lines are good and air filter is good. also bad gas can cause that problem. the worst outcome would be your throttle body going out on you.

Sounds like you ran extremly LOW on gas or out.

You need to have the throttle reset..

Try a VW shop. The'll have to use VAG com.

If it is what I think it is.
