Yes, You can rent these tools from Some Larger Auto Supply Chain Stores. I would get it Washed and DeGreased First and make sure that the Leak is Coming from this Point before I tore into it Though. After it is Cleaned up really well, You will be able to Locate the Leak a Lot Easier. Please Rate My Response! Thanks!

SOURCE: front crankshaft seal, 1989 hilux

Hello,

Yes, it's possible to change the seal after removing the balancer.
If the balancer shows signs of scratching, wear at the place of the seal, change that part too!

To remove the old seal, drill 2 small opposite holes in the seal flange ( there is metal in it ).
Screw 2 (parker) screws in the holes, so you can pull the seal out gently.
Grease the new seals' inner race, and put some sealant paste to the external race.
Push it back in place with a wooden piece ( drill a hole in the center for the crankshaft end )
Grease the outher race of the balancer. This will help the seal come gently into place.

Good luck!

I have a ford f-250 with 460 engine. 1983 model and have to replace the front crank seal. how much trouble is it?I already have the radiator off and replacing it.

You'll need to remove the crankshaft pulley and the harmonic balancer, which you'll need a harmonic balancer removal tool. The center bolt is usually on really tight. You can use a seal puller to remove the crankshaft seal from the timing cover.
