Valve timing needs to be set.

I have a 96 cavalier. We had to replace the Head because the original one was warped. Now the valve timing is off. How do we set it?

I am assuming that you have the 2.2L OHV engine (most do). If you have a timing chain problem, you may want to think about this....this engine is prone to timing chain tensioner breakage. This causes the timing chain to jump out of time. This will often cause the pistons to slam into the valves in the aluminum head, causing valve damage. If you decide to replace the timing set, insure that you get the chain, both gears, and a new tensioner. Install them and set the timing back to correct specs. THEN, perform a compression check of all cylinders BEFORE attempting to start the car. If there is uneven compression, you will need to pull the cylinder head and have it repaired or replaced before you can operate the vehicle. This is a tricky job. Aluminum heads are easy to warp and/or crack. You will need to replace all the cylinder head bolts when you replace the head as they are special bolts that are designed for one-time use as they have a stretch factor built into them. Remember to use thread sealant on those head bolts that extend into the water jacket or you will have coolant leakage. And most, important, USE A TORQUE WRENCH that is in good working order when tightening the head bolts. Be SURE to follow the correct pattern and torque settings or you will have problems.

Small metal clicking noise when I push gas pedal

is it just one click noise per push of the pedal or is it a repetitive clicking noise that gets faster as the engine speeds up? if its from the engine, it could be a warped valve making contact with the cylinder head. not a HUGE problem but causes less MPG and less power. to fix that, (assuming you know which valve is warped) youll need a lot of time, a lot of patience, a valve spring compressor (looks like a C clamp,) different socket wrench tools, possibly some screwdrivers, and maybe a couple more misc things. procedure: youd drain the oil, take off the valve cover, detach exhaust manifold from cyl head, remove the cylinder head, use the spring compressor to tighten the valve spring down to remove the old valve, then install the new one, put the head back on, reattach exhaust manifold, put the valve cover back on (might as well replace head and valve cover gaskets while you have the chance) then fill the oil back up. also if you had to remove anything above the valve cover to get to it, reinstall those as well.

What that means are new valve seats and valve guide, with new valve stem,with new or refurbished valves,This is a common need after so many years in service

If your head is warped, i would replace it. You cn get it shaved, but you might run into more spark knock (Detonation) and valve clearance issues. Adjusting the valves has nothing to do with a warped head.

My 96 cavalier 2.2L is overheating all the way in the Red. check gauges light comes on. replaced coolant cap and thermostat and it still overheats! this last time i had steam coming from around the spark...

An engine can be destroyed even after overheating once. If there's steam coming from around the spark plug the head and or block is warped, at very least the head gasket has been destroyed. Take the car to a repair shop immediately, but I'm afraid the damage I'd already done.

Most likey a bad head gasket between #2 and 3 cylinder. Pull the valve cover and see ifthe valves are working, and blue smoke could be valve guide seals and the valves may be stuck open.

After replacing valve cover gasket with dry fel-pro gasket,

Your new gasket has tabs that make it easy to set in place; the tabs hold the position properly on the cylinder head. The gasket also has the rubber coating to establish a tight seal between the cylinder head and the the valve cover, even if there is slight damage or warping. Proper torque for the valve cover bolts is between 50-100 in-lbs., which is about 8 ft-lbs for a maximum.

If you have the gasket properly set, and proper torque on the valve cover bolts, you should not leak.

If you still experience a leak after double checking the gasket and the bolt torque, I would replace the valve cover itself. You will find several at most any salvage yard, and probablly will cost you $10.00 or less for a used valve cover.

1983 toyota 22r/2.4 had head shaved .022 installed cam shaft 180 degrees out tryed to start noticed problem.corrected problem,in result intake valve appears to be staying open on cylinder 1and4.question is...

piston has contacted the valves that stay open. they are bent and you need to remove the head and replace them and then reinstall the head with the #1 piston at top dead center and the cams for the #1 cylinder both pointing down, this is the end of the compression stroke and the begining of the power stroke. at this point on the valve train and valve springs are affecting the valves, keeping them open and the rocker arms are not affecting the valves and should both be loose. set distributor to fire on cylinder #1.

I need to change one of the engine valves on honda civic 96. where can I find Engine Diagram and manual to do that

i uploaded a copy of the factory service manual to mediafire for you. 95-97 honda civic service manual

but as j55guy said "But thats not a job the average person can do."

i would suggest pulling the head and taking to a machine shop. they can make sure the valve is seated properly and will also check for any other problem like
  • warped head
  • bad valve guides/seals
  • damaged valve seats
  • etc...
