Using pan to collect antifreeze, open drain at bottom of rad & remve about 2 qts. of fluid. Close drain. Remove rad hose from thermostat housing. Remove bolts holding thermostat housing keeping an eye on direction of thermostat for replacement. Clean housing mating surface as well as the block surface. Using new gasket put gasket goo on housing side only & make sure thermostat remains seated properly. Using fingers if possible, tighten bolts. If seated O.K. use wrench to tighten to about 20ft.lbs. Tighten hose & refill antifreeze. Start car & put heater on to hot. Keep eye on temperature gauge. Once thermostat opens gauge reading will start to level off. Have fun!

My 1998 Dodge Neon keeps running hot

Make sure your fluid is up where it should be in your rad. Make sure your hoses are not kinked and is your rad clean on the inside. You may have to flush it out.
I would change your thermostat as it could be seized shut as well. I would put a new thermostat before tearing a lot of things apart

Fuel is metered based on a signal the computer gets from the coolant temperature sensor. Over heating may have damaged it. If the wire connection is good the sensor may be bad, Change the sensor. It is very close to the thermostat (19MM deep well socket needed)
