All of the sudden the engine has a hard time accelerating, spitting/coughing, changed fuel and air filters, pulled all intake sensor connections off with no difference in acceleration. had the transmission checked by shop. only does it at high rpm when not in gear and does it during entire acceleration while in gear. makes a slight hissing/ rubbing sound from drivers side while acceleration is inhibited. if hissing sound goes away for a moment engine runs fine. does not make a difference with the air cleaner detatched. does not appear to have a miss or firing problem.

Re: 2001 buick regal gs 3.8L
Sounds like a plugged catylic convertor. You might check with a GM dealer to make sure if it falls in the Special Policy coverage to get it replaced under warrenty, it has to have less than 120,000 miles on it though.

There could the dirt in the engine carburetor please clean it or the the engine is getting rich ,or the on board computer may be faulty in the car or the wiring of the spark plug is defective get it checked ..............................
car quit when you accelerate, could have stopped up fuel filter or weak fuel pump, check fuel pressure with new fuel filter should be 40 - 47 psi.if fuel okay could have massive intake leak, check for air leak at the air intake duct if air intact duct goes to air filter is open that will cause intake leak or intake manifold gasket leaking or ignition timing off timing chain could jump time for high mileage engine.
Thanks for using FixYa. The BUICK Regal Mass Air Flow sensor is usually
installed in the intake air duct between the air filter and the throttle body
mounted on the intake manifold. Also check the throttle body for mass air flow sensors location. On mass air flow sensors with a sense wire, this wire can
become contaminated with dust particles. These particles can be removed with
automotive solvents that are safe for the use on mass air flow sensors. Before replacing the
mass air flow sensor check for air leaks in the connecting air ducts and intake
manifold. These leaks can cause similar symptoms as a malfunctioning mass air
Bad or contaminated BUICK Regal Mass Air Flow sensor can possibly cause a wide
range of various vehicle drivability problems such as stalling, especially when
the engine is cold, misfiring, poor acceleration, etc. In addition, a problem
with the Mass Air Flow sensor often causes the "check engine" or
"service engine soon" light in the vehicle instrument panel to
Please do accept the solution if the issue is resolved or else revert for further assistance.
CHECK FUEL PRESSURE IT SHOULD BE 41 - 47 PSI. IF NOT REPLACE FUEL FILTER.IF NO CHANGE. REPLACE FUEL PUMP.IF FUEL PUMP IS GOOD.YOUR PROBLEM COULD BE A INTAKE LEAK OR SPARK IGNITION PROBLEMS.ALSO USE A SCANNER TO CHECK FOR FAULTY SENSORS OR THEFT DETERENT PROBLEMS.
