Same problem with my passat. Any solutions

    coolant seems to be okay.

Another issue could be that the water pump has cracked, therefore not cooling the engine. In which case the water pump and the cam belt will have to be replaced (very expensive). This fault is VW's, as the water pump is made out of bakerlite (plastic), subjecting it to hot and cold temperatures will crack it usually somewhere between 50,000 kms - 100,000 kms, depending on variables like usage, area climate etc....It should be made out of brass given the crucial nature of this device, but VW consider recycling issues more important!

how can i find my thermostat on my 2003 v6 passat?

  • Ralf Feb 27, 2009

I got similar issues. I replaced the thermostat and the car is still overheating after idling 30minutes in the driveway (coolant in the reservoir starts to boil).
I also have no heat inside the car.

On the side: They used plastic impellers since metal is corroding and breaks.

Check your thermostat. To see if it opens when hot. From cold drop the thermostat in hot water, if it opens it is alright.

1999 VW Passat AC/heat doesn't work? The belt broke this summer? I was told should still blow heat even if no belt?

If you are talking about the belt for the ac compressor, yes the heater should still work.
If the blower is not working, you will need to have the blower motor checked for voltage and ground.

Shop claims my heater core is plugged and needs to be replaced. 2003 VW Passat GLX 4Motion, V6. Any other options

Probably not. It really depends on the situation and what is going on. If you are not getting any heat it could be the heater core or it could be as simple as a thermostat.

I purchased a 2003 late 52 plate vw passat 2.0 petrol 130 sport after a few days the oil light came on then i topped it up after two weeks of driving local i found i done a check and found it needed...

from the VW manual........"expect to use about 1 litre for every 500 km."the oil level should be checked every week".........some cars have a breather on the side of the block that needs cleaning every year.(looks like a metal canister about 2.1/2" tall by 4"wide with a hose to the inlet manifold/air cleaner).

Dash lights on heating controls (lowest section of

Maybe if all the lights don't work but if only the heating control lights its more then likely the bulb for the controls or the wiring to the bulb. You will need to pull the HVAC panel out to check (check fuses anyway first) but i do not believe there is a fuse for HVAC illumination only..

#4 coil needs replacing

here is what i remember ... there was a class action law suit against VW about the high failure rate of the coils especially for the 4 cyl cars with turbo ... VW lost and agreed to install heat shields around the coils ... not sure what years are involved but you might check with a VW dealer to see if you come under that agreement .. as i recall VW charged a fortune for the replacement coils and labor.. a few years ago you could expect a second coil to go bad and even a third or all eventually .. VW would only change one coil at at time when in warranty .... the replacement coil did not appear to be an improved version .. .. it looks like VW is obligated to install the heat shields on models included in the suit ..
