Question about 2001 Mazda Protege
The car starts but then won't stay running. When you press on the gas it will go and then just shut off. When you first press on the gas it hesitates and then takes off. What could this be?
I have seen this problem and it was the air intake hose of the engine was cracked and allowing excessive unmetered air to enter the engine when you accelerate (causes the engine to run very lean and stall out) due to engine lift, the crack is hard to see and will be on the bottom of the hose.

If you change the plugs it good ideas to also change cap, rotors and wires. have your distributor unit and air mass sensor check. both parts are cheap from junk yard if you have to replace them. remove the distributor cap see if there any oil in the unit and check the contact between the rotor and the cap and also check the coil, making sure you getting 12V. Check fuel pump for proper pressure. There is no way you can test and check the unit except replacing them which I don't recommend, I would recommend take it to a local mazda dealer and have them plug it into the computer and get the code, one they tell you what it is, then you can actually do your own work or repair, most place will charge 35-80 bucks depend on the dealer, call and get an idea how much it cost first for diagnostic. its expensive but its Worth it if you plan to fix your own car. It will cost you lots of money replacing parts to see if that will solve the problems. Distributor and air mass sensor both you cant test them at home, replacing them with the use parts is the only remedy seeing if it faulty, again don't recommend it, can get expensive.
